Weekend Box-Office: THE MARTIAN Back on Top As New Releases Fumble

Among a wave of four new wide releases, a few of them being a good fit for the upcoming Halloween, only one came out on top, just not the one anyone expected. Ridley Scott's "The Martian" is back as the #1 movie at the box-office while "The Last Witch Hunter", "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension", "Jem and The Holograms" and "Rock the Kasbah" all disappointed.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"The Martian" returned at the top of the charts after being shortly dethroned by "Goosebumps". The film grossed $15.9 million over the weekend and has now reached $166 million domestically. Meanwhile, the Jack Black starrer and former No. 1 movie slid down to No. 2 and  almost matched the leader's gross with $15.5 million, a pretty good hold from last week.

Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" is still in third place with a weekend gross of $11.3 million. However, despite the apparently satisfactory results, the film is, so far, the weakest of the Spielberg-Hanks collaborations with only $32.5 million at the domestic box-office. Even overseas, the film only brought in $6.9 million.

Vin Diesel's latest starring vehicle, "The Last Witch Hunter" opened below expectations at No. 4 with $10.8 million. The fantasy actioner has a reported production budget of $70 million and international markets will only add $13.4 million to the disastrous debut.

"Hotel Transylvania 2" rounds up the top 5 with $9 million as the film passed the $300 million milestone worldwide.

"Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" opened in fifth place with $8.2 million, the worst of all six existing "Paranormal Activity" movies. This particular sequel is also the most expensive of the entire franchise with a reported budget of $10 million. To its defense, the film did open in 1,227 less theaters than "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" which opened with $18.3 million last year. This strategy is part of a deal with theaters to release the film on VOD earlier than usual and then share a percentage of the VOD sales with participating theaters up to 90 days from its theatrical opening.

The weekend's biggest flops are "Jem and the Holograms" and "Rock the Kasbah" which grossed $1.3 million from 2,413 theaters, and $1.5 million from 2,012 theaters, respectively. Universal's "Steve Jobs" biopic also provided an unpleasant surprise with only $7.2 million grossed after expanding to more than 2,400 theaters.

New Wide Releases: "Jem and the Holograms", "Rock the Kasbah", 'The Last Witch Hunter", "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension".
