The horror reboot "Final Destination: Bloodlines", the sixth installment in the franchise, pulled off a huge surprise and dominated the weekend box office with an explosive debut. Meanwhile, the semi-wide release of The Weeknd's psychological thriller "Hurry Up Tomorrow" failed to garner much interest.

"Final Destination: Bloodlines" opened with $51.6 million from 3,523 theaters, which is by far the best opening in the entire franchise. The first five films opened with (in order): $10 million (2000), $16.2 million (2003), $20.1 million (2006), $27.4 million (2009) and $18 million (2011). "Bloodlines" already grossed more than the entire domestic total of "The Final Destination 2" ($46.9 million) and "Final Destination 5" ($42.5 million), and will soon surpass the first ($53.3 million), third ($54 million) and fourth ($66.4 million) films.
Overseas, the reboot also added another $54.1 million for a worldwide debut of $105.7 million against a budget of $50 million. With such a strong debut, and mostly positive reception from both critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore), the film will certainly end up being the highest grossing entry in the long-running series.
Marvel's "Thunderbolts*" dropped to second place with $16.6 million, down 48.6% in its third weekend. The film has now grossed $155.5 million in North America and another $170.7 million from foreign markets, which brings its worldwide total to $326.2 million.
The vampire horror film "Sinners" also lost one position, finishing in third place with $15.2 million. The film continues to perform incredibly well, dropping just 31.2% in its fifth weekend. Once again, the movie added 16 additional theaters last week. Domestically, the film has now reached a total of $240.5 million, while overseas it adds another $76.4 million for a worldwide total of $316.9 million.
The video game adaptation "A Minecraft Movie" fell from #3 to #4, grossing $5.9 million. It's stilla great performance, with only a 22.3% decline in its seventh week in theaters. The film has grossed a total of $416.7 million domestically and $512.8 million internationally. That's a global tally of $929.5 million. Will it make it to $1 billion ? Time will tell.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the action thriller sequel "The Accountant 2" with $4.7 million, down 28.8%. Now in its fourth week in theaters, the film's domestic total has reached $58.8 million, while internationally it raked in $35 million. That's a global cume of $93.8 million, which is still not great for the $80 million movie.
The psychothriller "Hurry Up Tomorrow", which is something of a vanity project for Canadian singer/songwriter Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, tanked with $3.3 million from 2,020 theaters. Echoing the artist's much-maligned TV show "The Idol", the film received scathing reviews from critics (14% Rotten Tomatoes) and plenty of hate from audiences ("C-" CinemaScore). At least it didn't cost much, with a fairly modest production budget estimated at around $15 million. It will still lose money, though.
In other news, A24's dark comedy "Friendship" starring Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd and Kate Mara, added 54 extra theaters and grossed a fantastic $1.4 million from a total of 60 screens, which is a remarkable $23,338 per-theater average.
