"Sinners" scored a second weekend that is almost as strong as its opening weekend, which is a rare and impressive performance. It was followed, at a considerable distance however, by the 20th anniversary re-release of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith", which surprised everyone with an impressively strong debut, and the sequel "The Accountant 2" starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. The newly released horror video game adaptation "Until Dawn" failed to impress.

"Sinners" dominated the box office in its sophomore frame with $45.7 million, dropping just 4.8% from its debut, which is jaw-droppingly amazing, especially for a horror film, which usually suffer relatively steep drops in their second weekends. This is the smallest second weekend drop ever for an R-rated film. Overall, it ranks as the third best sophomore frame performance, behind 2009's "Avatar" which only fell around 2% in its second weekend, while "Shrek" actually went up 0.3%. The film has now grossed a total of $123.2 million domestically in 10 days, while overseas it adds another $40 million for a worldwide total of $163.2 million against an $80 million production budget. "Sinners" has now officially become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever released in April.
The "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" re-release opened in second place with $25.4 million from 2,800 theaters, scoring a generous $9,105 per-theater average, which is very impressive for a 20-year-old movie. The fact that the movie will only run in theaters for a single week most likely helped generate a certain level of urgency among moviegoers. The "Phantom Menace" re-release opened with $8.7 million and grossed a total of $13.4 million last year. The 1997 Special Edition releases performed as follows: "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" opened with $35.9 million and grossed a total of $138.2 million, "The Empire Strikes Back" opened with $21.9 million and grossed $67.6 million, while "Return of the Jedi" opened with $16.2 million and ended its theatrical run with $45.4 million. Episode III also raked in $17.6 million from foreign markets, which brings its re-release tally to $43.1 million worldwide.
The first new wide release, the action thriller sequel "The Accountant 2" made its debut in third place with $24.5 million from 3,610 theaters, which is almost identical to the first film's $24.7 million debut in 2016. It also grossed another $13.2 million overseas. The first film went on to gross $86.2 million domestically and $69.3 million overseas. The sequel however, has a bigger budget estimated at around $80 million, compared to the original's $44 million production costs. On a more positive note, the film is enjoying a positive reception from both critics (78% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).
"A Minecraft Movie" is still going strong with $22.7 million in its fourth weekend, down 43.9% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed a total of $379.9 million in North America, and another $436 million internationally. That adds up to $815.9 million worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the other new wide release, Sony's horror film "Until Dawn" which opened with $8 million from 3,055 theaters. Overseas it adds another $10.1 million. The film's saving grace is its small $15 million production budget. The critical reception was mixed-to-negative (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), and moviegoers didn't enjoy it much, either ("C+" CinemaScore).
