Weekend Box Office: SINNERS Opens With $48 Million Taking #1 From MINECRAFT MOVIE

Weekend Box Office Sinners

Ryan Coogler's southern gothic vampire horror film "Sinners" dominated the Easter weekend box office with a spectacular debut, dethroning "A Minecraft Movie", which is still going strong. It's worth mentioning that both movies are Warner Bros releases, marking the first time in over a decade that two movies from the same studio grossed more than $40 million each in the same weekend.

"Sinners" topped the Easter weekend frame with $48 million from 3,308 theaters, and is on its way to becoming the highest grossing R-rated April release. The only R-rated movies to score big numbers in April were "Indecent Proposal" in 1993 ($106.6 million total domestic) and "Flashdance" in 1983 ($92.9 million domestic total). It's also a somewhat similar performance to that of the "Nosferatu" remake, which grossed $40.8 million over the 5-day Christmas holiday, proving that horror films and religious holidays are a great match.

"Sinners" also scored the second-best Monday for an R-rated horror film at the box office, earning $7.8 million, behind 2017's "It", which grossed $8.76 million. It also raked in another $15.5 million from foreign markets, bringing its worldwide debut to $63.5 million. The film was loved by both critics and audiences (98% on Rotten Tomatoes, "A" CinemaScore), which bodes well for its holding power in the coming weeks.

"A Minecraft Movie" fell down to second place with $40.4 million, dropping 48.4% in its third weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $343.8 million domestically and $374 million internationally. That's a global total of $717.8 million.

The religious animated film "The King of Kings" finished its second weekend in third place with $17.5 million, dropping only 9.3% over the Easter holiday frame. The film has now grossed a total of $45.6 million against a $15 million production budget.

The spy thriller "The Amateur" starring Rami Malek also lost one position, landing in fourth place with $7 million, a 52.6% decline in its sophomore frame. With $27.1 million in North America and another $36.7 million from foreign markets, the film's worldwide cume now stands at $63.8 million against a $60 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the acclaimed war film "Warfare" which grossed $4.8 million in its second weekend, dropping a soft 41.6% from its debut. The film has now grossed $17.1 million.

In other news, GKIDS' anime film "Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing" based on a SEGA mobile game opened in seventh place with $2.8 million from 800 theaters. Also, the 2005 "Pride & Prejudice" adaptation starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen was re-released for its 20th anniversary and finished in eight place with $2.8 million from 1,393 theaters.

Two new releases that failed to make the Top 10 are the animated film "Sneaks" which opened with $530,786 from 1,500 theaters, and the romantic comedy remake "The Weddding Banquet" which made its debut with $918,598 from 1,142 theaters.
