Weekend Box Office: MICKEY 17 Takes Down CAPTAIN AMERICA With $19M Debut

Weekend Box Office Mickey 17

Bong Joon Ho's new sci-fi film "Mickey 17" topped the weekend box office, scoring a decent debut for a film that isn't a sequel, prequel, reboot, live-action remake or a superhero movie. It wasn't a great weekend, though, with the other wide or semi-wide releases like "Rule Breakers" and "In the Lost Lands" underperforming.

"Mickey 17" opened in first place with $19 million from 3,807 theaters. Overseas, the film raked in an additional $24.5 million for a worldwide total of $43.7 million. The film's budget is estimated at around $118 million, which will prove to be a problem if the movie takes a steep dive next week. Time will tell. The film received a positive reception from critics (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was mostly lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).

"Captain America: Brave New World" dropped to second place with $8.3 million and a 43.5% drop in its fourth weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $176.4 million domestically and $194.5 million overseas. That's a global total of $371 million.

The fact-based thriller "Last Breath" finished its second weekend in third place with $4 million, down 47.8% from its opening weekend. The film has grossed a total of $14.5 million.

At #4 we find the Stephen King adaptation "The Monkey" with $3.9 million, a 39% decline from last week. The film's domestic tally has reached $31 million after three weeks in theaters, while overseas it raked in $14.7 million, which adds up to a global total of $45.7 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Paddington in Peru" with $3.7 million, which brings it North American cume to $36.8 million. With $138 million from foreign markets, the film's worldwide tally is now at $175.6 million.

Angel Studios' "Rule Breakers" opened in ninth place with $1.5 million from 2,044 theaters. The film received a positive reception from both critics (81% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

The post-apocalyptic action film "In the Lost Lands" starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista barely cracked the top 10 with a $1 million debut from 1,370 theaters. The film was skewered by critics (26% on Rotten Tomatoes), and according to the RT audience rating (46%), moviegoers didn't enjoy it either.
