Janet Mcteer Harry Potter Series

Casting is underway for HBO's "Harry Potter" series based on J.K. Rowling's fantasy book series, and according to the latest reports, Oscar and Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer ("Albert Nobbs", "Ozark") is in talks to play Professor Minerva McGonagall. The role was previously played by Maggie Smith in the movies, and Fiona Glascott in the "Fantastic Beasts" trilogy.

In other casting news, Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu ("I May Destroy You", "Genie") is about to close his deal to play Professor Severus Snape, while John Lithgow was previously cast as Professor Albus Dumbledore. HBO is not commenting the casting reports as the series is still currently in pre-production, and only stated that they will confirm details as they finalize deals.

The show is said to be a faithful adaptation that will dive deep into each of the iconic books, and is designed to run over a decade. It hails from writer-showrunner Francesca Gardiner ("His Dark Materials") and director/executive producer Mark Mylod ("Succession", "The Menu").

The "Harry Potter" TV series will be filmed at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden where the movies were shot, and it's set to premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027. There is still no word on who will play Harry, Hermione, and Ron, but it has been revealed that WB has received around 32,000 audition tapes.

McTeer can next be seen in "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning". Essiedu is set to star in the British comedy horror film "The Scurry".
