Weekend Box-Office: RED ONE Dominates With Modest $32 Million Debut

Dwayne Johnson's very expensive Christmas action comedy "Red One" topped the box-office charts and ended "Venom: The Last Dance"'s three-week reign, but failed to impress despite being the weekend's only new wide release. Overall, earnings were down over 36% compared to the same frame last year which saw the release of "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" in theaters.

"Red One" opened in first place with $32.1 million from 4,032 theaters, while overseas it raked in another $51.1 million for a worldwide debut of $83.2 million. The film cost around $250 million to produce, to which it adds at least $100 million in marketing costs. The critical reception was largely negative (33% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers loved it ("A-" CinemaScore).

"Venom: The Last Dance" finished its fourth weekend in second place with $7.3 million, down 53.9% from last week. The threequel has now grossed $127.5 million domestically and $308.5 million overseas for a worldwide total of $436 million.

"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" held in third place for its sophomore frame, grossing $5.2 million, a 51.3% decline from its debut weekend. The holiday film has now grossed $19.8 million.

The horror thriller "Heretic" dropped from #2 to #4 and grossed $5.1 million in its second weekend, dropping 52.3%. The film's domestic cume has reached $20.4 million, and it also adds $5 million from foreign markets.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the animated film "The Wild Robot" with $4.2 million, dropping just 36.2% in its eighth weekend. The domestic gross has reached $137.6 million, and internationally it raked in $171.1 million, which brings its global tally to $308.8 million against a budget of $78 million.

In other news, the Filipino drama "Hello, Love, Again" opened in eighth place with $2.3M from 248 theaters, a very impressive debut that ranks as the highest-grossing opening weekend and widest release of a Filipino film in the North American market.
