Toho, the Japanese entertainment company and creator of Godzilla, has announced that a new "Godzilla" movie has been officially greenlit and will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the writer and director of last year's Oscar-winning blockbuster hit "Godzilla Minus One". He will once again handle the VFX, after winning the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023. It's unclear if the new movie is a direct sequel to "Godzilla Minus One", but that film's ending did tease the possibility of a sequel.
Toho posted a video on X of Yamazaki announcing the upcoming project: "Hello everyone, I have wonderful news, I'll be directing the new Godzilla movie. Please stay tuned".
"Godzilla Minus One" was Toho's 33rd "Godzilla" movie and the 37th to include the iconic kaiju. It went on to make $116 million worldwide against a $15 million budget and became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film ever. The film bears no connection to Warner Bros and Legendary's Monsterverse which includes Godzilla and King Kong movies, as well as the Apple TV+ series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters".
Godzilla is famously the oldest-running movie franchise in the world. The first film was released in 1954 and was followed by 36 other movies.
