There was always going to be just one movie at the top of the charts this week, and that is James Cameron's highly anticipated sci-fi sequel "Avatar: The Way of Water". The movie scored a massive debut, but also slipped below predictions. Is that a bad thing, or not important at all. Let's find out together, shall we ?
Read more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"Avatar: The Way Of Water" opened in first place with $134 million from 4,202 theaters. This ranks as the sixth opening weekend of the year, and the 38th of all time. It also ended up falling short of pre-release projections that hinted at a $150-170 million debut. Perhaps those predictions were overly optimistic. However, it's still a massive improvement over 2009's "Avatar", which opened with $77 million (although some inflation adjustments might shrink that gap).
The original film's real strength was its holdover power. Just think about it. The first film opened with $77 million and went on to gross $785 million domestically. It crossed the $700 million mark after 72 days in theaters, and scored 11 consecutive weekends at #1. The real question here is, will the sequel manage to match the original's week-to-week performance, because if it does, it will be a massive record-breaker.
Cameron's sequel also opened internationally with $300.5 million from 52 markets, adding up to a worldwide total of $434.5 million. As far as global opening weekends go, the sequel ranks as #2 in 2022, behind "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" ($452 million). It also opened in China, where it raked in $57.1 million, also an improvement over the original's $40.9 million debut in 2009.
"Avatar: The Way Of Water" received a positive reception from both critics (77% Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore). There's no reason that the movie shouldn't continue to do solid business in the next weeks, especially with the very lucrative holiday frame approaching. If so, it will probably take down this year's highest grossing movie "Top Gun: Maverick" ($1.4 billion), but it remains to be seen if it can match, or even surpass the original's $2.7 billion and become the all-time highest grossing movie. There's also the question of actually turning a profit considering "The Way of Water" cost around $460 million to produce, making it the most expensive movie ever made.
After five consecutive weekends in the top spot, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" landed in second place this weekend with $5.4 million. That's a steep 52% decline. The film has grossed a total of $418.9 million domestically and another $367.5 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $786.5 million. That's well below the original film ($1.3 billion), and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" ($955.7 million).
The holiday action comedy "Violent Night" finished in third place with $5.6 million, dropping just 35%. The film's domestic total has reached $34.9 million, while overseas it added another $20.1 million. It all adds up to $55 million worldwide against a $20 million budget.
Disney's animated film "Strange World" dropped to fourth place with $2.2 million, a 41.8% decline from last week. The film's domestic total has reached $33.7 million, while internationally it raked in $23.2 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "The Menu" with $1.7 million, dropping just 38.6%. The film has grossed a total of $32.1 million domestically and another $29.1 million overseas, which brings its worldwide total to $61.2 million against a $30 million budget.
