Natalie Portman to Star in HBO Movie DAYS OF ABANDONMENT

Natalie Portman is set to play the lead role in HBO's upcoming movie "The Days of Abandonment", which is based on the novel of the same name by "My Brilliant Friend" author Elena Ferrante. The film will be adapted and directed by Sundance award winner Maggie Betts ("Novitiate"). The project is currently in preproduction.

The story follows Tess (Portman), a woman who abandoned her own dreams for a stable home life, but is in turn abandoned by her husband and her world is thrown off its axis. The film is a visceral, no-holds-barred journey into the mind of a woman in crisis that confronts the norms of motherhood and female identity as Tess traverses the darkest reaches of her own psyche.

Betts and Portman will also executive produce. HBO Films will produce in association with Medusa. "The Days of Abandonment" was previously adapted for a 2006 Italian film.

Portman is also set to star in the Apple limited series "Lady in the Lake" based on the novel of the same name by Laura Lipman. She is currently filming the Marvel movie "Thor: Love and Thunder".
