Dan Stevens Joins Julia Roberts, Sean Penn in Watergate Series GASLIT
Dan Stevens ("Downton Abbey", "Legion") has joined the cast of the Starz series "Gaslit", replacing Armie Hammer who exited the show in the wake of sexual assault allegations.

The series is based on the Slate podcast "Slow Burn", and it focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the Watergate scandal. Julia Roberts stars as as Martha Mitchell, the protagonist and the celebrity Arkansan socialite who was one of the first to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate in spite of her affiliation to the president via her husband, Attorney General John Mitchell, who will be played by Sean Penn.

Stevens is set to play John Dean, who is the young White House Counsel torn between his ambition and his struggle with whether he can lie to protect the President.

The show is executive produced by Roberts, Sam Esmail ("Mr. Robot", "Homecoming"), Chad Hamilton, Robbie Pickering, Matt Ross, Gabriel Roth and Josh Levin. Pickering will also serve as showrunner, while Ross is directing.

Stevens is also set to star in Amazon's seven-part anthology series "Solos".
