Weekend Box-Office: ONWARD Disappoints With $40M Debut While THE WAY BACK Opens Soft

The Disney and Pixar animated film "Onward" is off to a slow start this weekend, but still managed to top the charts. Meanwhile, the other new wide release, Warner Bros' sports drama "The Way Back" also scored a lackluster debut. Overall, the box-office did not slow down much despite the Coronavirus scare, and most older releases had strong weekend-to-weekend holds.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

The new Disney/Pixar venture "Onward" dominated the box-office this weekend with a $40 million debut from 4,310 theaters. This is the third lowest wide Pixar release, ahead of 2015's "The Good Dinosaur" ($39 million) and the first "Toy Story" ($29 million) in 1995. There is no information available regarding the film's budget, but it can't be less than $150-170 million.

Overseas the film opened with $28 million from 47 markets. The film has received a generally positive reception from critics: 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 61 on Metacritic, and the audience reception has been equally enthusiastic: 96% Audience Score on RT, a 6.9 User Score on Metacritic and a solid "A-" grade from CinemaScore.

The Blumhouse horror film "The Invisible Man" finished in second place with $15.1 million, dropping 46%, which is a pretty great second weekend performance for a genre film. The film has grossed a total of $52.6 million domestically and $45.6 million overseas, against a $7 million production budget.

The second new release, Warner Bros' "The Way Back" starring Ben Affleck opened in third place with $8.5 million from 2,718 theaters. Internationally it opened in only 14 countries and raked in less than $1 million. The film was well-received by both critics (87% score on RT and 68 on Metacritic), and moviegoers (84% on RT, 6.9 on Metacritic, and a "B+" from CinemaScore).

"Sonic the Hedgehog" dropped to #4 and grossed $8 million over the weekend.  The film dipped 51% in its fourth weekend, and its domestic cume has reached $140.8 million. Overseas it added another $12 million for an international total of $154.8 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the Disney/20th Century release "The Call of the Wild" with $7 million. The film has grossed $57.4 million domestically, so far, and another $42.1 million internationally. Due to its lackluster box-office performance, 20th Century is projected to lose around $50 million, and because it has a $135 million budget, it would need to gross at least $250 million worldwide to make its money back. Right now it hasn't even managed to top $100 million.

A new entry in the Top 10 is the Jane Austen adaptation "Emma." which expanded this weekend into over 1,500 theaters and finished in sixth place with $5 million.
