New release "The Call of the Wild" was expected to have a modest debut over the weekend, but as it turns out, the film gave "Sonic the Hedgehog" quite a run for its money. In the end, the video game adaptation managed to hold on to the #1 spot at the weekend box-office, while Disney's 20th Century flick came in second. The horror film "Brahms: The Boy II" managed to finish in the Top 5 with an unimpressive opening.

"Sonic the Hedgehog" is still running strong in its second weekend. The film only dropped 54.7%, grossing $26.3 million, which brings its domestic tally to $106.6 million after 10 days. Overseas it added another $38 million for an international total of $96.5 million.
Disney's new release of a 20th Century Fox film, the Jack London adaptation "The Call of the Wild" opened in second place with $24.8 million from 3,752 theaters, a great deal ahead of initial projections that predicted a $17 million debut. However, despite its impressive debut performance, the film's hefty $135 million price tag means it's going to have a hard time turning a profit. Overseas it only managed to rake in $15.4 million from 40 markets, so the domestic market is the film's only hope.
"The Call of the Wild" received mostly mixed review from critics, with the film scoring 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and 47 on Metacritic. The audience reception however, was more generous, with RT reporting a 90% Audience Score, Metacritic a 7.4 User Score, and CinemaScore an "A-" from its opening night polls.
In third place we find Warner Bros' "Birds of Prey" with $7 million after a 59% drop. The film has grossed a total of $72.5 million domestically and $101.2 million overseas.
The horror film "Brahms: The Boy II" is the other new wide release, and it opened in fourth place with $5.9 million from 2,151 theaters. It's a modest performance even compared to the first film, which opened with $10.7 million in 2016. The film also opened in 23 international markets and raked in $2.2 million. With the film costing only $10 million to produce, it's a decent result. "The Boy II" received a negative reception from both critics (11% on RT and 30 on Meta) and moviegoers (41% on RT, 4.9 on Meta and a "C-" from CinemaScore).
"Bad Boys For Life" rounds out the Top 5 with $5.8 million. The film's domestic total now stands at $191.1 million, while overseas it has topped $200 million.
