It looks like Paramount has hit the motherload as their latest new release, the video game adaptation "Sonic the Hedgehog" exploded into theaters this Presidents' Day weekend with a record-breaking debut. Business is booming across the Top 10, as well, and newcomers "Fantasy Island", "The Photograph" and "Downhill" performed as expected.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Sonic the Hedgehog" has delivered the largest three-day opening ever for a video game adaptation with $57 million from 4,167 theaters, and it's expected to gross as much as $68-70 million for the extended holiday time frame, which would be the fourth largest Presidents' Day debut ever. Overseas, the film opened in 40 markets and raked in $43 million. The film has received a mixed reception from critics with 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and 46 on Metacritic. Audiences, however, loved it according to the 95% Audience Score on RT, the 8.5 User Score on Metacritic, and a solid "A" grade from CinemaScore's polls.

In second place we find Warner Bros' "Birds of Prey" with $17.1 million over the 3-day time frame, and an estimated $19.6 million for the 4-day extended weekend. The DC Comics movie has dropped 48% in its second weekend. The film's domestic total has reached $61.6 million after 10 days, while overseas it added another $23 million from 78 markets for an international total of $83.6 million.

Another new release, Blumhouse's "Fantasy Island" reboot opened in third place with $12.4 million from 2,784 theaters for the 3-day and around $14 million for the 4-day, which is pretty much as expected, and a decent performance considering the film only cost $7 million to produce. It was also released in 35 international markets and raked in $7.6 million over the weekend. The film wasn't a hit with critics. No, actually that's an understatement, as the film holds a horrifying score of 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and 20 on Metacritic. Moviegoers pretty much hated it as well, with the film showing a 46% Audience Score on RT, 4.8 User Score on Metacritic, and a terrible "C-" CinemaScore grade.

At #4 we have another new film, the romantic drama "The Photograph", which opened with $12.2 million from 2,516 theaters, and is expected to finish the Presidents' Day extended weekend with around $13.4 million. The film's budget is an estimated $16 million, which shouldn't be hard to recoup. "The Photograph" played well with critics as you can see from the 75% Rotten Tomatoes score and Metacritic's 63. Audiences also more or less enjoyed the film, as RT reports an 82% Audience Score, Metacritic a 6.3 User Score, and CinemaScore a "B+" grade.

"Bad Boys For Life" rounds out the Top 5 with $11.3 million for the 3-day and $12.8 million for the 4-day. The film dropped just 6% this weekend, and its domestic cume has reached $182.8 million after 31 days. It also added another $11.1 million internationally for an overseas tally that is now at $187 million.

Neon's "Parasite" is enjoying a healthy post-Oscar win boost. The film has expanded into over 2,000 theaters and finished the weekend in eighth place with $5.5 million. It is expected to finish the holiday time frame with as much as $6.6 million.

Although no one was expecing it, Searchlight's "Downhill", a remake of the 2014 French film "Force Majeure", made it into the Top 10. It rounded out the Top 10, to be exact, with $5 million from 2,301 theaters. The film actually overperformed, as it was initially expected to gross around $4 million. "Downhill" failed to charm critics, scoring 40% on RT and 49 on Metacritic. Moviegoers were even less impressed with the film as indicated by the 12% RT Audience Score, the 4.0 User Score on Metacritic, and the "D" grade from CinemaScore.
