Weekend Box-Office: Blumhouse's INVISIBLE MAN Scares Up $29M Debut

It has been an interesting weekend at the box-office. As the only new wide release, Universal and Blumhouse's "The Invisible Man" scored a #1 debut. One of the weekend's surprises, however, is the anime "My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising" which broke into the Top 5, while the hidden-camera reality comedy "Impractical Jokers: The Movie" finished in the Top 10.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"The Invisible Man" topped the charts this weekend with $29 million from 3,610 theaters against a $7 million budget, becoming the first horror film in a long while to deliver a respectable opening weekend. The film also opened in 47 international markets and raked in $20.2 million. The U.K. leads the overseas pack with $2.8 million, followed by France with $2.2 million.

The film received stellar reviews from critics, with a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71 on Metacritic. The audience reception was equally enthusiastic, with an 89% Audience Score from RT, 7.3 User Score from Metacritic, and a solid "B+" from CinemaScore.

In second place we find "Sonic the Hedgehog" with $16 million as the film dropped just 39%. The video game adaptation's domestic tally has reached $128.2 million after 2 weeks in theaters. Overseas, the film added another $26.8 million from 62 markets, which brings its  international cume to $137.2 million. The film's worldwide total now stands at $265.4 million against a $85 million budget.

The Disney/20th Century film "The Call of the Wild" finished in third place with $13.2 million. The film dropped 47% in its second weekend, and domestically it grossed $45.9 million after ten days. With another $11 million raked in overseas, the international cume has reached $33.4 million. Its worldwide total is now at $79.3 million, but considering it has a hefty $135 production budget, it's not quite a success story.

At #4 we find an entry that will probably look like a big surprise. It's FUNimation's anime film "My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising", which opened on Wednesday in 1,260 theaters, and raked in $5.1 million over the weekend, and a five-day total of $8.5 million. This is the studio's second largest domestic release of all-time, behind 2019's "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" ($30.7 million).

The Top 5 is rounded out by Sony's "Bad Boys For Life" with $4.3 million. The film only dropped 26.4% as it continues its strong performance and it's very close to topping $200 million domestically, while overseas it has already achieved this goal and also added another $4.9 million this weekend.

In other news, the reality comedy "Impractical Jokers: The Movie", which is based on the truTV hidden camera reality game show series of the same name, finished in seventh place this weekend with $3.5 million. The film opened in select theaters on February 21, and expanded into over 1,500 theaters this weekend. So far it has grossed a total of $6.6 million.
