Weekend Box-Office: STAR WARS RISE OF SKYWALKER Opens to Just $176M, Falling Short of FORCE AWAKENS and LAST JEDI

As expected, "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" was the weekend's biggest event, and the film managed to top the charts with an impressive debut. However, Disney might be a bit disappointed by the fact that it's the weakest opening weekend in their sequel trilogy. Meanwhile, Universal's musical "Cats" fell short of expectations and flopped badly.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" is the final chapter in a series of nine films, but after 42 years of "Star Wars", the series did not end on a record-breaking note. While it did open with an impressive $175.5 million over the weekend from 4,406 theaters, the trilogy capper failed to top $200 million in its opening weekend like its predecessors "The Force Awakens" ($247.9 million in 2015) and "The Last Jedi" ($220 million in 2017). On the bright side of things, it is the third highest December debut, behind those two "Star Wars" flicks.

While it's a decent start, word-of-mouth will ultimately determine just how profitable this $300 million blockbuster really is. Overseas it had a rough launch in China where it grossed a lackluster $12.1 million, but overall it's international cume is $198 million from 52 markets. That adds up to an estimated $374 million worldwide.

The film's critical and audience reception also fell behind previous installments. Critics gave mostly mixed reviews (57% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic), which were some of the worst since "The Phantom Menace", and moviegoers also seemed less than impressed as CinemaScore reports a "B+" from their opening night polls, which is the lowest grade ever for a "Star Wars" movie.

Last week's #1 film, "Jumanji: The Next Level" dropped to #2 with $26.1 million. The film dropped 56% from its opening weekend, which is to be expected given its competition. The film's domestic cume has reached $101.9 million after 9 days in theaters. Overseas it added another $32.6 million for an international total of $210 million.

Disney's "Frozen II" finished in third place with $12.3 million, which brings its domestic tally to $386.5 million. With another $717 million grossed internationally, the film has now raked in $1.103 billion worldwide.

In fourth place we find another new release, the much-maligned Broadway musical adaptation "Cats". With a production budget estimated at almost $100 million, the film is nothing short of a cat-astrophe, grossing just $6.5 million from 3,380 theaters, which ranks in the Top 20 worst openings of all-time for a film released in over 3,000 locations.

Overseas, the musical grossed around $11 million, with the U.K. leading the pack with $4.4 million. The film will add 37 more territories next week.

"Cats" was simply mauled by critics (18% on Rotten Tomatoes and 32 on Metacritic), and it also failed to charm moviegoers ("C+" grade from CinemaScore). We can expeect this one to fade pretty fast in the next couple of weeks.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Lionsgate's "Knives Out" with $6.1 million, which brings its domestic cume to $89.5 million. Overseas the film has grossed a total of $96 million.

In sixth place we find the true story drama "Bombshell", which expanded nationwide this weekend and delivered $5 million from 1,480 theaters, falling below expectations.
