Sony definitely hit the motherload this weekend with their "Jumanji" sequel, which not only dominated the box-office charts, but also managed to vastly overperform as fellow new releases "Richard Jewell" and "Black Christmas" grossly underperformed.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

While initally expected to open with around $45 million, the sequel "Jumanji: The Next Level" claimed the top spot at the box-office with an incredible $60.1 million from 4,227 theaters in its opening weekend. This is the 13th largest December opening, and Sony's largest ever. It's also the highest live-action debut for stars Kevin Hart and Jack Black.

Overseas the film launched last week, and this weekend it raked in $85.7 million from 34 markes, which brings its international tally to $152.5 million. "Jumanji: The Next Level" received mostly mixed reviews from critics (66% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic) but a more positive reception from moviegoers ("A-" from CinemaScore's polls).

Disney's "Frozen II" dropped to second place after three weeks at the top. The film grossed $19.1 million this weekend and its domestic total has reached $366.5 million after 23 days in theaters. Internationally, the film's cume has reached $666 million, which brings its global tally to $1.033 billion. The first film reached the billion mark after 15 weeks.

"Frozen II" is now Disney Animation's third billion-dollar hit alongside "Frozen" and "Zootopia", and the seventh biggest animated release of all time worldwide. It's also Disney's sixth $1B movie this year, and the studio will probably also add "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" to that list.

The murder mystery "Knives Out" finished in third place with $9.2 million. The film has grossed a total of $78.9 million domestically and another $83.3 million overseas, against a $40 million budget.

Clint Eastwood's latest true strory drama "Richard Jewell" opened in fourth place with only $5 million from 2,500 theaters, which is well below expectations, as the film was projected to open with around $10 million. The film received a positive reception from both critics (73% on Rotten Tomatoes and 69 on Metacritic)  and moviegoers ("A" grade from CinemaScore).

"Richard Jewell" managed to rank among the Top 50 worst openings ever, but it's not alone. It is joined by the last of the new wide releases, the Blumhouse horror remake "Black Christmas" rounds out the Top 5 with a weak $4.4 million from 2,625 theaters. It's also the second worst wide release for a Blumhouse film opening in over 2,000 theaters. The other one was "Jem and the Holograms". "Black Christmas" was panned by critics (44% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic), while moviegoers hated it ("D+" from CinemaScore).

In limited release, the drama "Uncut Gems" starring  Adam Sandler opened in five locations with $525,498, delivering an impressive per screen opening average of $105,100. It's the 26th best opening average of all-time, and A24's best ever. The film will expand nationwide on Christmas day.
