Dark fate, indeed. The new "Terminator" film scored a #1 debut, but the film tanked domestically and it's also struggling overseas. Meanwhile, the historical biopic "Harriet" overperformed, Edward Norton's neo-noir flick "Motherless Brooklyn" made the Top 10, and the animated film "Arctic Dogs" is a complete disaster.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
The Paramount/Skydance/Fox blockbuster "Terminator: Dark Fate" opened in first place with a disappointing $29 million from 4,086, slightly ahead of the $27 million debut of "Terminator Genisys" in 2015. However, that film cost $155 million to produce, while the new installment holds a price tag of $185 million.
Futhermore, the new film was hailed as a return to form for the franchise, with series creator James Cameron involved as a producer, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising their roles from the originals, and being a direct sequel to the first two films of the series, and ignoring the lackluster sequels. For all these reasons, the film is a bitter box-office disappointment.
"Terminator: Dark Fate" is sluggish in its overseas performance, as well, with $72.9 million from 48 markets this weekend for an international total of $94.6 million after two weeks. China leads the pack with a soft $28 million.
The film enjoyed a mixed-to-positive reception from critics (70% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic), and moviegoers generally liked it (85% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B+" from CinemScore's polls.
Warner Bros' "Joker" finished in second place with $13.9 million, which brings its domestic total to $299.6 million. The film only dropped 27.7%. Overseas, it grossed a total of $634.4 million, and its worldwide tally now stands at $934 million.
Disney's sequel "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" dropped 37% this weekend and finished in third place with $12.1 million. Its domestic total is a disappointing $84.3 million after 21 days in theaters, but with $298.9 million grossed overseas, the film is not a total disaster, even with a heavy $185 million budget.
In fourth place we find another wide release, the historical biopic "Harriet" which overperformed from its single-digit projections to a $12 million debut. The film cost $17 million to produce. It received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (73% on Rotten Tomatoes and 66 on Metacritic), and an extremely enthusiastic reception from moviegoers (98% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare "A+" from CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the animated film "The Addams Family" with $8.4 million. The film's domestic cume has reached $85.2 million, while overseas it has raked in a total of 44 million.
Edward Norton's latest directorial project, the neo-noir drama "Motherless Brooklyn" opened in ninth place with $3.6 million from 1,342 theaters, which is a better outcome than initial projections predicted. The film was not expected to make the Top 10.
The animated film "Arctic Dogs" turned out to be a bigger flop than expected with $3.1 million from 2,844 theaters and barely making the Top 10 in last place. The film was mauled by critics (17% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the audience reception was lackluster (57% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and "B-" from CinemaScore).
