The sports biopic "Ford v Ferrari" achieved a rare performance this weekend at the box-office, surpassing expectations to claim the top spot, while the "Charlie's Angels" reboot crashed and burned in the worst way possible. Also, Warner Bros' "The Good Liar" didn't make the Top 5, but that was generally expected.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
The Disney release of Fox's "Ford v Ferrari" conquered the top spot at the box-office with a $31 million debut from 3,528 theaters. It's an impressive performance since the film was initially expected to deliver around $20 million. The film opened in 41 markets overseas and raked in $21.4 millon over the weekend. "Ford v Ferrari'" received a very positive reception from both critics (92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 on Metacritic) and moviegoers (99% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare "A+" from CinemaScore's audience polls).
The war epic "Midway" finished in second place with $8.7 million, dipping 51%. The film's domestic cume has reached $35.1 million after 10 days, and it also brought in another $10 million from international markets. However, with a $100 million budget, it has a long way to go before turning a profit.
Sony's "Charlie's Angels" tanked hard this weekend with a $8.6 million debut in third place. Opening in 3,452 theaters, the film was expected to score around $13 million, but failed to meet even the lowest expectations. Its production budget is estimated at $48-50 million. Overseas, the film launched in 26 markets and raked in $19.3 million. "Charlie's Angels" received a mixed reception from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 51 on Metacritic), but a warmer welcome from audiences (80% Audience Score and a "B+" from CinemaScore).
In fourth place we find Paramount's comedy "Playing With Fire", which dropped just 33%, grossing $8.5 million in its second weekend in theaters. The film has grossed a total of $25.4 million domestically against a $30 million budget. Overseas it added another $1.3 million for an international total of $4.5 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Last Christmas" with $6.7 million, which brings the film's domestic total to $22.6 million after ten days in theaters. The film added another $8.6 million internationally for an overseas tally of $13 million.
The last of the new wide releases, Warner Bros' thriller "The Good Liar" opened with $5.6 million from 2,439 theaters, which isn't great, but not a disaster considering it only cost $10 million to produce. The film also opened in 12 international markets and has brought in a total of $3.9 million. Critics gave the film mostly mixed reviews (64% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic), while the audience reception was lukewarm (86% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B" grade from CinemaScore).
In other news, "Joker" has reached the $1 billion milestone and is now the first ever R-rated movie to do so. It is currently the fourth DC Comics adaptation to cross the $1 billion mark, and the seventh film this year.
