Weekend Box-Office: FROZEN 2 Triumphs With Record-Breaking November Debut

Disney scored another huge hit with their latest animated film "Frozen II" and also broke a couple of records as well. The other new releases, the biopic "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" and the action thriller "21 Bridges" struggled, but still managed to debut within expectations.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

The Disney animated sequel "Frozen II" topped the charts with $127 million from 4,440 theaters, which is the largest opening ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios. It's also the biggest debut for an animated film not released in the summer, and for the month of November. As far as November debuts go, it ranks fifth all-time, ahead of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1", but below "The Twilight Saga" films "Breaking Dawn Part 1" and "Part 2", and "New Moon", and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire".

Overseas the film opened with $223.2 million from 37 territories, opening at #1 in each and every one of those countries. This is the highest all-time international debut for an animated film, surpassing "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" ($153 million in 2009). China leads the pack with a $53 million debut.

"Frozen 2" received generally positive reviews from both critics (75% on Rotten Tomatoes and 65 on Metacritic), and moviegoers ("A-" from CinemaScore).

Last week's #1 movie "Ford v Ferrari" dropped 49% this weekend, grossing $16 million for a second place finish. The film has grossed a total of $57.9 million after 10 days in theaters, while its overseas total has reached $45.8 million.

The Mister Rogers biopic "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" starring Tom Hanks almost fell short of expectations, but still opened in third place with a decent $13.5 million from 3,235 theaters. The film only cost $25 million to produce, so turning a profit shouldn't be too difficult. The awards hopeful received stellar reviews from critics (96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 80 on Metacritic).

The R-rated action thriller "21 Bridges" starring Chadwick Boseman ("Black Panther") also struggled and finished in fourth place with $9.3 million from 2,665 theaters. While not a great start for the film, it's not a total disaster since it only cost $33 million to produce. The film received mixed reviews from critics (45% on Rotten Tomatoes and 50 on Metacritic), and a lukewarm reception from audiences ("B+" grade from CinemaScore's polls).

The Top 5 is rounded out by the war epic "Midway" with $4.7 million. The film has grossed a total of $43.1 million domestically, and another $38.6 million overseas. Of course, it cost $100 million to produce, so it still has a long way to go before turning a profit.
