The "Joker" continues to defy expectations in another record-breaking weekend, while the animated film "The Addams Family" is off to a solid start. Meanwhile, the Will Smith starrer "Gemini Man" and the R-rated comedy "Jexi" failed to impress.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
Warner Bros' comic book movie "Joker" maintained its momentum and only dropped 43% in its second weekend, grossing $55 million, which is officially the largest October second weekend ever, a record previously held by "Gravity" ($43.2 million in 2013). The film's domestic cume has reached $192.7 million after just 10 days in theaters.
The 43% drop is particularly remarkable since most comic book movies register steep drops in their sophomore frames. For example, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" dropped 70% in its second weekend, and the R-rated "Logan" dipped 57%.
Overseas the film picked up an estimated $123.7 million from 79 countries, bringing its international tally to $351.2 million. With a worldwide total of $543.9 million, "Joker" is currently the ninth largest DC Comics adaptation ever, behind "Justice League" ($657.9 million).
The first of the new releases, "The Addams Family", a new animated adaptation of the comics created by American cartoonist Charles Addams, opened in second place with $30.2 million from 4,007 theaters. The film has received mixed reviews from critics (44% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45 on Metacritic), but a somewhat warmer welcome from audiences (72% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B+" grade from CinemScore's polls).
In third place we find another new release, Paramount's sci-fi thriller "Gemini Man" starring Will Smith. The film scored a modest $20.5 million debut from 3,642 theaters. With a production budget estimated at $138 million, it's a low starting point, but overseas it managed to rake in $31.1 million from 58 territories in its second weekend, for an international total of $39 million.
"Gemini Man" received mostly negative reviews from critics (26% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 on Metacritic), but the audience reception was more enthusiastic (84% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B+" from CinemaScore).
The animated film "Abominable" landed in fourth place with $6.1 million in its third weekend. The film has grossed a total of $47.9 million domestically and $60.1 million internationally.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Downton Abbey", which continues to perform well. The film grossed $4.9 million over its fourth weekend, which brings its domestic cume to $82.6 million. Overseas it added another $4.1 million for a total of $70 million.
The biopic "Judy" is another solid performer as it continues to expand nationwide. The film added another $3.2 million this weekend for a domestic total of $14.9 million.
The last of the new wide releases, Lionsgate's R-rated comedy "Jexi" disappointed with an eighth place debut, grossing only $3.1 million from 2,332 theaters.
And in other news, Bong Joon Ho's Palme d'Or winner "Parasite" is off to a great start in just three theaters, delivering a $376,264 opening, which is the third-best three-theater debut ever, and the film holds the best per-theater-average of 2019, so far ($125,431).
