Weekend Box-Office: ABOMINABLE Secures Top Spot For Universal

Universal scored another #1 release with their new animated film "Abominable", which wasn't really that hard to achieve as the week's only new wide release. Meanwhile the Top 10 is mostly dominated by recent releases and one surprise, the limited release of the Judy Garland biopic "Judy", which delivered a surprisingly solid performance.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

The animated feature "Abominable" from DreamWorks Animation and its Chinese-American joint venture company "Pearl Studio", opened in first place with $20.8 million, the largest opening for a non-franchise animated film in 2019, which is frankly disturbing and a bad sign for creativity in Hollywood. Furthermore, both "Abominable" and the studio's R-rated comedy "Good Boys" are the only original films to open at #1 in 2019.

"Abominable" also raked in $10.2 million internationally from 30 countries. The film enjoyed a warm, reception from both critics (80% on Rotten Tomatoes and 62 on Metacritic) and moviegoers (96% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and an "A" grade from CinemaScore's polls). However, despite the film's current success, its $75 million budget is going to make turning a profit a difficult task, so unless the film can manage to hold its ground in the following weeks, it won't be much of a hit for the studio.

In second place we find last week's #1 film, the period drama "Downton Abbey" with $14.5 million. The film dropped 53.3% from its opening weekend, which is normal, and its domestic total has reached $58.5 million. Overseas it added another $10 million for an international total of $48.6 million. Its global tally is now at $107.1 million, and its production budget was estimated at around $20 million.

The true story crime drama "Hustlers" ascended from #5 last week to #3 this weekend, grossing $11.4 million for a domestic total of $80.6 million. The film dropped just 32% and has become STX's third largest release of all-time. Overseas it brought in another $3 million for an international total of $14.8 million.

The Stephen King adaptation "It: Chapter Two" finished in fourth place, and the film is enjoying quite a healthy performance. With just a 32% drop, the sequel brought in $10.4 million in its fourth weekend, and its domestic cume is now at $193.9 million. Internationally the film raked in another $11 million for a total of $223.5 million and a worldwide cume of $417.4 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the Brad Pitt sci-fi adventure film "Ad Astra" with $10.1 million. The film performed well in its second weekend, dropping a decent 47%, but with a domestic total of $35.5 million and an overseas tallly of $53.5 million, it's going to be difficult to see this one as a hit, considering it cost somewhere around $100 million to produce, without marketing costs.

The weekend's biggest surprise is the biopic "Judy" starring Renee Zellweger, an Oscar hopeful that brought in $3 million from just 461 theaters, which is just downright impressive. The film will expand nationwide next weekend.
