Emmy-winner Jason Bateman ("Ozark") is in negotiations to direct and star in Disney and Fox's "Clue" reboot, a murder mystery comedy inspired by the popular board game from Hasbro. The cast also includes Ryan Reynolds.
"Deadpool" scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired to pen the script in 2018. Reynolds boarded the project last year as part of a three-year, first-look deal with Twentieth Century Fox. Bateman will also work on the script.
First developed in 1949, the game is played by three to six players who must solve a murder by discovering the culprit, where the crime took place, and which weapon was used. Each player assumes the role of one of the six suspects, and attempts to deduce the correct answer by strategically moving around a game board representing the rooms of a mansion and collecting clues about the circumstances of the murder from the other players.
A previous adaptation of the board game was made for the big screen in 1985, and it starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, and Eileen Brennan. The new film is not a remake of the 1985 adaptation.
Bateman, who recently won an Emmy for Best Directing in a Drama series after directing the "Ozark" episode "Reparations", is also set to direct two episodes of the HBO series "The Outsider".
