"Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard and "The Leftovers" breakout Carrie Coon are in talks with Sony to star in the upcoming "Ghostbusters" sequel. The film will be directed by Jason Reitman ("Juno", "Up in the Air") from a script by Reitman and Gil Kenan ("Monster House").

Plot details are unavailable, for now, but sources say that the story will focus on a single mother (Coon) and her family. Wolfhard would play her son. Although not mentioned how the family connects to the Ghostbusters, there have been reports that indicate the protagonists will be children, two teen boys and two teen girls. There will be no connection to Paul Feig's 2016 reboot.

Reitman was reportedly hesitant about casting an actor from "Stranger Things" due to similarities between the projects, and the show's direct references to "Ghostbusters", but it seems that both the filmmaker and the studio execs were "blown away" by Wolfhard's audition.

The young actor has recently finished filming the third season of "Stranger Things" and can also be seen this year in "It: Chapter 2". Coon recently appeared in "Widows", lent her voice to "Avengers: Infinity War", and she has also been filming the upcoming thriller "The Nest".

The "Ghostbusters" sequel is expected to be released Summer 2020.
