The family fantasy flick "The House WIth a Clock in Its Walls" topped the box-office charts, but the weekend proved to be one of 2018's worst as three other new wide releases, "Fahrenheit 11/9", "Life Itself", and "Assassination Nation" severely underperformed.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
While the overall weekend results were a disaster, Universal's "The House With a Clock in Its Walls" still managed to rise above expectations, opening with $26.8 million from 3,592 theaters. It even outperformed another Jack Black kid-friendly fantasy flick, 2015's "Goosebumps", which grossed $23.6 million in its opening weekend. Overseas, the film opened in 14 markets and brought in $3.1 million. "The House With a Clock in Its Walls" received mixed reviews from critics (68% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic), and CinemaScore reports a decent "B+" grade from their opening night polls.
After opening in third place last week, the comedy thriller "A Simple Favor" finished in second place in its second weekend with $10.4 million. The film dropped just 35% and has grossed a total of $32.5 million domestically. Its international cume now stands at $10 million from 36 markets.
The Conjuring spinoff "The Nun" dropped from second to third place and grossed $10.2 million over the weekend. Although the film has slowed down considerably since its impressive debut just three weeks ago, the film still managed to cross the $100 million milestone domestically and is getting closer to the $200 million mark overseas.
"The Predator" sequel/reboot dropped a massive 65% in its second weekend, finishing in fourth place with $8.7 million. The film has grossed $40.4 million domestically and another $54.5 million overseas from 82 markets.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Warner Bros' romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians", which continues to perform strongly, grossing $6.5 million over the weekend. The film's domestic tally has reached $159.4 million, becoming the seventh highest-grossing romantic comedy of all-time.
Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 11/9" opened in eighth place with $3.1 million from 1,719 theaters, a disappointment considering Moore's 2004 predecessor, "Fahrenheit 9/11" opened with $23.9 million and went on to gross $119.1 million. The film received positive reviews from critics (79% on Rotten Tomatoes and 70 on Metacritic), and an "A" from CinemaScore.
The newly released melodrama "Life Itself" failed to make the Top 10 and opened with a catastrophic $2.1 million from 2,609 theaters, the second worst opening weekend of all-time for a film debuting in over 2,500 locations. The film got skewered by critics (13% on Rotten Tomatoes and 21 on Metacritic), but CinemaScore's polls reveal a decent "B+" grade from moviegoers.
The last of the new releases, Neon's "Assassination Nation" also finished outside the Top 10, debuting with $1 million from 1,403 theaters. The film received mixed reviews from critics (65% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritic).
