Warner Bros. execs must be in seventh heaven right now, as their latest release, the horror film "The Nun" just became their third consecutive hit at the box-office after the success of "Crazy Rich Asians" and "The Meg". Meanwhile, the newly released revenge actioner "Peppermint" delivered a decent debut.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
The "Conjuring" spinoff "The Nun" opened in first place with $53.5 million against its $22 million budget, the best debut of the entire franchise, topping the previous record of $41.8 million held by "The Conjuring", the series' original film. It's also the second largest September opening ever, behind the $123.4 million opening of Warner's "It" last year, as well as the second largest opening for an R-rated horror film, once again behind "It". Warner Bros. has officially become the first studio in 25 years to hold the first and second spots at the weekend box-office for 4 consecutive weeks.
"The Nun" also brought in $77.5 million overseas from 60 markets, another record for the Conjuring franchise. The film has received negative reviews from critics (28% on Rotten Tomatoes and 46 on Metacritic), and CinemaScore reports a pretty bad "C" grade from their opening night polls.
"Crazy Rich Asians" dropped 38% and finished in second place with $13.6 million. Even though it's slowing down, the film has grossed an impressive $136.2 million domestically and another $28.5 million overseas.
Another new release, the actioner "Peppermint" starring Jennifer Garner opened in third place with $13.2 million from 2,980 theaters, which is pretty much according to expectations. The film only cost $25 million to produce, so it should turn a safe profit. While the film received a generally negative reception from critics (14% on Rotten Tomatoes and 29 on Metacritic), audiences seemed to generally like it as CinemaScore reports a decent "B+" grade.
The creature feature "The Meg" finished in fourth place with $6 million after a 42% drop. The film has reached a domestic total of $131.5 million, while overseas it has brought in $360.4 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the social media thriller "Searching" with $4.5 million, dropping just 26%. The film has grossed $14.3 million domestically and another $17.7 million overseas.
The last of the new releases, the faith-based drama "God Bless the Broken Road" opened outside the Top 10 with $1.5 million over the weekend, which is well below studio expectations which were somewhere around $4 million.
