Disney and Lucasfilm's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" suffered a steep decline in its second weekend at the box-office, but still managed to hold in first place. Meanwhile, "Adrift" opened a bit below expectations, while the Blumhouse sci-fi horror "Upgrade" scored a decent debut. The Johnny Knoxville comedy "Action Point" flopped.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Solo: A Star Wars Story" is still the #1 movie at the box-office, but everyone is going to be talking about that catastrophic 65% drop. The film grossed $29.2 million over the weekend, which brings its domestic total to $148.8 million. The spinoff is also struggling overseas, where it brought in another $30 million this weekend for an international total of $115.3 million. While not a total disaster for Disney, the film's $250 million budget and additional marketing costs might end up taxing the studio more than expected.
In second place, the R-rated superhero movie "Deadpool 2" is doing fine, with $23.3 million over the weekend. The film's domestic total has topped $250 million, while overseas it has grossed $344 million.
The first of the new wide releases, the fact-based shipwreck-at-sea drama "Adrift" opened with $11.5 million. The film is lagging a bit behind expectations, but still a decent opening considering its $35 million budget. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (71% on Rotten Tomatoes and 56 on Metacritic), and a modest "B" grade from CinemaScore's opening night polls.
"Avengers: Infinity War" dropped to #4 with $10.3 million this weekend. The film has grossed $642.8 million domestically, while overseas its tally has reached $1.33 billion. The Marvel flick is very close to becoming the fourth film to have ever topped $2 billion worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the ensemble comedy "Book Club" with $6.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $47.3 million against a $10 million budget.
Another new release, the Blumhouse movie "Upgrade" scored a $4.4 million debut, which is decent for a film that cost somewhere around $3-5 million. The film received a positive reception from critics (85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 65 on Metacritic).
The weekend's biggest disappointment comes from Paramount's comedy "Action Point" starring Johnny Knoxville. The film opened with a weak $2.3 million from 2,032 theaters, among the worst openings for a movie released in over 2,000 locations. It was mauled by critics (19% on Rotten Tomatoes and 37 on Metacritic), and even CinemaScore reports a "C+" grade, a bad omen for things to come. Even with a low $19 million budget, it's still considered a flop.
