Paramount's horror film "A Quiet Place" scared off the competition and secured an impressive victory at the box-office. Meanwhile the teen sex comedy "Blockers" performed well enough, and the semi-wide release "Chappaquiddick" overperformed.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

John Krasinski's directorial debut "A Quiet Place" opened with a strong $50 million over the weekend, becoming 2018's second largest three-day opening. It's an even bigger victory considering the film's modest $17 million production budget. Krasinski also wrote and starred in the film alongside his real-life spouse Emily Blunt. The film received almost universal praise from critics (97% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82 on Metacritic), and a decent "B+" from CinemaScore.

In second place we have last week's #1 film, Steven Spielberg's sci-fi adventure "Ready Player One", which grossed $25 million this weekend with a 40% drop. The film's domestic gross is very close to topping $100 million and overseas it's nearing the $300 million milestone.

In third place we have another new wide release, the R-rated comedy "Blockers", which opened with $21.4 million, not necessarily an amazing debut, but on par with other R-rated comedies, like "Neighbors 2" ($21.7 million). The film has broken even with its $21 million budget. Overseas it has grossed an additional $10.7 million. The critics loved the comedy (82% on Rotten Tomatoes and 69 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports an okay "B" grade from moviegoers.

"Black Panther" dropped to #3 with $8.4 million after a soft 26.6% drop. With a domestic total of $665.3 million, the film has surpassed "Titanic" and is now the third highest grossing domestic release of all-time. Overseas the film's tally stands at $634.5 million, and its worldwide total is currently the tenth of all-time.

The Top 5 is rounded up by the faith-based drama "I Can Only Imagine" which dropped just 20% and added another $8.3 million to its domestic total which has now reached an impressive $69 million against a $7 million budget.

The new release "Chappaquiddick" performed better than expected with a $6.2 million debut from 1,560 theataers. The film received a positive reception from critics (78% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67 on Metacritic) and a "B" grade from CinemaScore.

Another semi-wide release, the fact-based drama "The Miracle Season" opened outside the Top 10 at #11 with $4.1 million from 1,707 theaters. While critics were mostly unimpressed (34% on Rotten Tomatoes and 44 on Metacritic), audiences gave it an "A" according to CinemaScore.
