It was a close race at the weekend box-office, but the Dwayne Johnson blockbuster "Rampage" managed to very narrowly surpass last week's #1 film, the horror "A Quiet Place". Another horror film, the new Blumhouse release "Truth or Dare" scored an impressive debut.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The big budget monster extravaganza "Rampage" opened at the top of the box-office, but barely made it there. The film scored an estimated $34.5 million from 4,101 theaters, which isn't going to break any records. The film cost $120 million to produce, and most of the big money are going to be earned overseas. Its international cume is already at $114 million, with $55 million raked in from China. "Rampage" received mixed reviews from critics (50% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45 on Metacritic), but it received a much more impressive "A-" from CinemaScore's opening night polls.
The highly acclaimed horror film "A Quiet Place" dropped to second place, but continues to impress. The film dropped only 35% and grossed $32.6 million over the weekend. Its domestic cume has now reached almost $100 million and it only cost $17 million to produce. Internationally it has raked in $51.7 million in 10 days.
In third place we have another new wide release, the Blumhouse horror film "Truth Or Dare" which performed well considering it had to go up against "A Quiet Place" and a not-so-warm welcome from critics. The film grossed $19 million over the weekend from 3,029 theaters against a $3.5 million budget. The critics absolutely hated the film (15% on Rotten Tomatoes and 36 on Metacritic), while audiences seemed to genuinely enjoy it, judging from the okay "B-" grade from CinemaScore.
