The sci-fi sequel "Pacific Rim: Uprising" managed to take down "Black Panther", but Disney's behemoth still walked away with plenty of money over the weekend. Meanwhile, the other new arrival, "Sherlock Gnomes", struggled to find an audience. Smaller releases "Paul, Apostle of Christ" and "Midnight Sun" managed to land in the Top 10 in spite of the heavy competition.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Universal and Legendary's "Pacific Rim: Uprising" topped the charts with $28 million over the weekend from 3,708 theaters. Although it doesn't look like much, the studio's initial projections were somewhat lower. The original film opened with $37.2 million in 2013. Overseas is where the sequel is doing really well, grossing $122.5 million over the weekend, including a solid $65 million debut in China. The film received mixed reviews from critics (45% on Rotten Tomatoes and 44 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a "B" grade from their audience polls.
"Black Panther" takes a step down for the first time after five consecutive weeks at #1, but leaves the top spot as the highest grossing comic book adaptation of all time. The film grossed $16.6 million over the weekend and its domestic cume has reached $630.9 million, beating the $623.3 million grossed by "The Avengers". It's also the fifth largest overall domestic release of all time, and closing in on "Jurassic World" ($21.3 million). The film also managed to top $606.4 million overseas. Internationally, it's only the twelfth largest worldwide release, and the third in the MCU behind both "Avengers" films.
In third place we have a holdover from last week, the faith-based drama "I Can Only Imagine", which grossed $13.8 million over the weekend after dropping just 19%. The film expanded into 624 additional theaters. Its domestic total now stands at $38 million after just 10 days, against a $7 million budget.
The new animated film from Paramount and MGM, "Sherlock Gnomes" fumbled its debut, grossing only $10.6 million from 3,662 theaters, a serious drop from the $25.3 million grossed by "Gnomeo and Juliet" in its opening weekend. The film also opened in 19 international markets, bringing in a total of $4.6 million since its debut on March 15th. "Sherlock Gnomes" received mostly negative reviews from critics (20% on Rotten Tomatoes and 41 on Metacritic), but an okay "B+" from CinemaScore.
The Top 5 is rounded up by last week's new release, the "Tomb Raider" reboot, which grossed $10.4 million this weekend and its domestic cume now stands at $41.7 million after 10 days. Overseas the film has grossed $170 million.
Another new release, the religious drama "Paul, Apostle of Christ" opened in eighth place with $5 million from 1,473 theaters, and is expected to perform well throughout the Easter holiday. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics (35% on Rotten Tomatoes and 48 on Metacritic) and an "A-" from CinemaScore.
The last of the new releases, the teen romance "Midnight Sun" landed at the bottom of the Top 10 with $4.1 million from 2,178 theaters. The film received negative reviews from critics (21% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 on Metacritic), but a decent "A-" from CinemaScore.
