Weekend Box-Office: READY PLAYER ONE Tops Easter Weekend with $53 Million 4-Day Debut

As expected, Steven Spielberg's sci-fi adventure "Ready Player One" had no problem securing the top spot over the Easter weekend. Tyler Perry's new film, "Acrimony", managed to score a strong debut in spite of the competition, but the third installment in the "God's Not Dead" series is pretty much dead on arrival.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Ready Player One" opened on Thursday and managed to bring in $53.2 million over the four-day Easter weekend. During the regular three-day weekend timeframe it grossed $41.2 million. This is Spielberg's largest opening weekend since the $100 million debut of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". "Ready Player One" also brought in $128 million internationally from 62 markets, including $61.7 million from China, a record for Warner Brothers. The film had a reported budget of $175 million. Aside from the solid box-office debut, the film also received a positive reception from critics (76% on Rotten Tomatoes and 64 on Metacritic) and  a solid "A-" from CinemaScore's audience polls.

Tyler Perry's "Acrimony" opened in second place with a decent $17.1 million fom 2,006 theaters. The film received mostly negative reviews from critics (15% on Rotten Tomatoes and 33 on Metacritic), but it seems to have found its audience according to CinemaScore's "A-" grade.

Marvel and Disney's "Black Panther" dropped to #3 and grossed $11.2 million over the weekend. The film's domestic tally has reached $650.6 million, while overseas it has raked in a total of $623.2 million. Domestically it is currently the fifth largest release of all-time and is expected to surpass "Jurassic World"  ($652.2 million) and "Titanic" ($659.3 million). Keep in mind, however, that the latter has a pretty steep inflation difference since 1997, and its domestic total adjusted for 2018 amounts to around $1.1 billion. Of course, no one takes that into consideration when writing the charts, but honestly it should matter because ticket sales are more important, otherwise it's just misleading.

The faith-based drama "I Can Only Imagine"  fell one spot to #4 after dropping just 21%. The film grossed $10.7 million over the weekend and its domestic total is now $55.5 million against a $7 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded up by last week's #1 film, "Pacific Rim: Uprising", which dropped a heavy 67% and only managed $9.2 million for the weekend. The film has grossed $45.6 million in 10 days domestically and another $122.4 million overseas.

The last of the new wide releases, another faith-based drama, Pure Flix's "God's Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness", failed to make the Top 10 with $2.6 million from 1,693 theaters. That's a considerable drop from the $7.6 million debut of "God's Not Dead 2" and even worse than the $9.2 million grossed by the first film in its opening weekend from just 780 theaters.
