"Avengers: Infinity War" continues to make money. No surprises there. While Disney and Marvel's behemoth continues its impressive run at the box-office, two new releases, "Life of the Party" and "Breaking In" found their audience over the Mother's Day weekend.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Avengers: Infinity War" is still topping the charts. The film dropped 46% and grossed 61.8 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic cume to 547.8 million after 17 days in theaters. Overseas the film had already topped $1 billion following a huge $200 million debut in China, the second best opening for the country, behind "The Fate of the Furious". Its worldwide total now stands at $1.6 billion, ranking fifth, so far.
In second place we have the first of the new wide releases, the comedy "Life of the Party" starring Melissa McCarthy, which opened with $18.5 million. While certainly a decent debut, considering its competition, the film ended up becoming McCarthy's lowest opening ever, behind 2014's "Tammy" ($21.5 million). The film received mixed reviews from critics (40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 42 on Metacritic), and a modest "B" from CinemaScore's audience polls.
The thriller "Breaking In" starring Gabrielle Union opened with $16.5 million, finishing in third place. The film boasts a minuscule $6 million budget, so the film has become quite a hit. Critics weren't particularly impressed (27% on Rotten Tomatoes and 42 on Metacritic), and CinemaScore reports a "B" grade, which will probably be enough to sustain the film in Top 10 for a while.
The comedy remake "Overboard" fell just 31% and landed at #4 with $10.1 million over the weekend. The film has grossed $29.5 million after ten days.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "A Quiet Place" with $6.4 million and the week's softest drop, just 18%. The film's domestic total has reached $169.5 million, while internationally it has grossed $100.4 million, against a $17 million budget.
