It was a very slow weekend at the box-office, so when a remake like "The Magnificent Seven" manages to top the charts, it doesn't quite feel like much of an achievement. The same goes for the modest debut of the animated feature "Storks".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Antoine Fuqua's "The Magnificent Seven" remake managed a $35 million opening, which is on par with the director's "The Equalizer", but the upcoming weeks are a big question mark since westerns aren't very successful as modern-era blockbusters. Either way, a $100 million run is to expected, but it won't be much comfort for the $90 million production. Internationally, the film grossed $24,8 million. The film received an "A-" from CinemaScore and a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes
In second place we have the other new wide release, the animated feature "Storks" with $21.8 million. It might not sound like much, and it really isn't. It's about half of the opening gross of "Hotel Transilvania" which set a September record in 2012. Moviegoers gave it an "A+" according to Cinema Score, while the critical reception amounted to a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Clint Eastwood's "Sully" dropped from #1 to #3 and grossed a solid $13.8 million (dropped only 36%) which adds up to a $92.3 million domestic total. "Bridget Jones's Baby" dropped to #4 with $4.5 million over the weekend, while "Snowden" follows close behind at #5 with $4.1 million.
New Wide Releases: "The Magnificent Seven", "Storks".
Biggest Drop : "Blair Witch" (-58.8%)
Smallest Drop : "Don't Breathe" (-32.6%)
