"Jason Bourne" is back and he packed quite a punch at the box-office. Fellow wide release "Bad Moms" performed well, but the teen thriller "Nerve" fell a bit below expectations.
The fourth installment in the super-spy action franchise to feature the titular character, "Jason Bourne" secured a #1 finish with $60 million, the second largest debut behind only "The Bourne Ultimatum" which opened with $69.2 million in 2007. Internationally, the film grossed another $50 million from 46 markets. While critics didn't show a lot of love for the sequel (56% on Rotten Tomatoes), moviegoers seemed to enjoy it (A- on CinemaScore). Featuring the return of franchise veteran Matt Damon, "Jason Bourne" also scored $22 million more than the 2012 reboot starring Jeremy Renner.
In second place with $24 million, "Star Trek Beyond" dropped almost 60%. The film crossed the $100 million milestone, but with only $105.7 million in 10 days, this sequel is lagging behind both other installments in the rebooted franchise. And with a budget of $185 million, that's not a good thing.
This week's second new wide release, the R-rated comedy "Bad Moms" opened in third place with $23.4 million versus a $20 million budget. That's pretty good, despite not being a breakout result, and it's also the fifth largest R-rated opening of 2016. The film received mixed reviews from critics (64% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an A from moviegoers according to CinemaScore.
The last of the new releases, the teen thriller "Nerve" grossed $9 million over the weekend and $15 million since it opened on Wednesday. The film scored 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and A- on CinemaScore.
New Wide Releases: "Jason Bourne", "Bad Moms", "Nerve".
Biggest Drop : "The Legend of Tarzan" (-63.4%)
Smallest Drop : "The Secret Life of Pets" (-38.5%)
