The first trailer, posters and images for the
"Point Break" remake have been released online. The film stars
Luke Bracey as Johnny Utah (formerly played by
Keanu Reeves), a young FBI agent who infiltrates a team of thrill seeking elite athletes, led by the charismatic Bodhi (
Edgar Ramirez), who are suspected of carrying out a string of staggering crimes that kill innocent people and send the world's economy into a tailspin. Bodhi's role was played by
Patrick Swayze in
Kathryn Bigelow's original film.
The updated version looks more like a
"Fast & Furious" movie than an actual remake, although 2001's
"The Fast and the Furious" was in many ways similar to
"Point Break". Which is funny considering F&F cinematographer
Ericson Core is directing this. I don't care much for the over-the-top action scenes and bad CGI, but I absolutely hate the gloomy color palette that the filmmakers probably believe will make the movie look cool. It doesn't. It just looks lifeless. And the characters are supposed to live life to the fullest, so I would imagine they should have gone with some brighter, intense cinematography, instead of this bland mess. And speaking of characters, Bodhi as played by Ramirez seems to be anything but the charismatic leader he's supposed to be. It's also a bit weird how they decided to change hairstyles between the two protagonists. Bodhi now has the dark hair while Utah has the long blonde hairdo. If that's the best they can think of for a remake, they should have just given up on it.
The remake also stars
Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer and
Delroy Lindo.
"Point Break" opens in theaters on December 25th (2D and 3D).
