There was nothing to stand in the way of the disaster movie "San Andreas" this weekend as the blockbuster demolished the competition for the top spot. Meanwhile, Cameron Crowe's new film "Aloha" flopped.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Dwayne Johnson has a lot to celebrate. His new film, "San Andreas" took the top spot with $53 million in three days, and this is Johnson's best debut outside of ensemble features like "Fast & Furious" and "G.I. Joe". While the film did not earn many praises from critics, it still attracted audiences both domestic and overseas. Internationally the film grossed $60 million. The budget is estimated at $110 million, so I assume Warner Bros. is happy with this outcome, especially since the studio was expecting a $40 million opening weekend.
This week's other wide release, the romantic dramedy "Aloha" tanked despite boasting a stellar cast which included Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone and Alec Baldwin. The film only earned $10 million in its first three days versus a $37 million budget. For director Cameron Crowe, this result is only marginally better than the $9.3 million debut of "We Bought a Zoo".
Meanwhile, "Tomorrowland" continues to plummet. The Disney film dropped 58% compared to last week and has now grossed $63 million domestically. Overseas the film has reached $70 million, but since the film cost $190 million to produce, it's easy to see why Disney would be disappointed.
New Wide Releases: "San Andreas", "Aloha".
Biggest Drop : "Poltergeist" (-65%)
Smallest Drop : "Home" (-34%)
