According to recent reports, Reese Witherspoon is in talks with MGM to reprise her role as idealistic Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde 3", 17 years after the original hit theaters. The 2001 film that started the franchise was based on the novel of the same name written by Amanda Brown, and was followed by a sequel in 2003, and a stage musical in 2007. The original grossed $141 million worldwide against an $18 million budget.
While the plot is kept under wraps for now, it is rumored to be in the spirit of the first film, but more focused on female empowerment. Also returning are screenwriters Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, who adapted the original film, and producers Marc Platt & Adam Siegel. Witherspoon will also produce.
Last year Witherspoon told E! News the following: "I do think it’s a good time to do [another movie]. I think women need that kind of positivity right now."
