Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal ("Brokeback Mountain", "Nightcrawler") is set to star as a villain in the upcoming sequel to "Spider-Man: Homecoming". The actor is in talks to star as the character Mysterio, first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964, a special effects wizard and stunt man who uses his expertise in illusions to become a supervillain.

Jon Watts will return to direct the sequel, along with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, two of the first film's screenwriters. Tom Holland will reprise his role as the Marvel web-slinger.

The "Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel will be released on July 5, 2019.

Gyllenhaal has a bunch of new films coming in 2019, including Daniel Espinosa's action drama "The Anarchists vs ISIS", the video game adaptation "The Division", and Brian Helgeland's crime thriller "Finest Kind". This year he can be seen in Dan Gilroy's horror "Velvet Buzzsaw" and Luca Guadagnino's mystery drama "Let It Fall Back".
