"Black Panther" is still the #1 movie at the box-office as Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" turned out to be far from the huge success everyone thought it would be. Meanwhile, the horror reboot "The Strangers: Prey at Night" confirmed expectations, while "Gringo" and "The Hurricane Heist" struggled.
"Black Panther" continues its reign at the box-office with $41.1 million domestically, bringing its domestic tally to $562 million. With another $516 million brought in from foreign markets, the film has crossed $1 billion worldwide.
In second place we have the first of the new wide releases, Disney's new franchise hopeful "A Wrinkle in Time", which disappointed with $33.3 million against a $100 million budget. To be fair, the studio did expect a $35 million debut, which the film landed short of, but pundits were expecting a much bigger debut given that there was a lot of publicity surrounding the film's push for diversity. That didn't seem to matter much, as the film received a negative reception from critics (42% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritic), while audiences responded with a lackluster "B" on CinemaScore.
The horror reboot "The Strangers: Prey At Night" opened in third place with $10.4 million, which is pretty much in line with expectations. The original 2008 film opened with $20 million and went on to gross $52.5 million domestically against a $9 million budget. The new film has an even lower $5 million budget, so even if it doesn't end its theatrical run on par with the original, it's still making a lot of money compared to its production costs. The film received negative reviews from critics (38% on Rotten Tomatoes and 50 on Metacritic) and a weak "C" from CinemaScore.
The spy thriller "Red Sparrow" finished in fourth place with $8.1 million, dropping 51.6% and bringing its domestic cume to $31.1 million. Overseas the film has grossed $51.8 million. Overall, considering its $69 million budget, it wouldn't be wrong to say that the film is struggling a bit.
The Top 5 is rounded up by the dark comedy "Game Night" which finished its third weekend with $7.9 million after a very decent 24% drop. The film has grossed $45 million domestically and $24.7 million internationally, against a $37 million budget.
Another new release, the action thriller "The Hurricane Heist" opened in eighth place with $3.1 million from 2,402 theaters. Even with a small $35 million budget, it's still a pretty bad debut. But, at least it made it into the Top 10, unlike the last of the new releases, the satire "Gringo", which opened with $2.6 million from 2,404 theaters, and failed to make it into the first 10 films at the box-office.
The twisted indie thriller "Thoroughbreds" impressed in limited release, grossing $1.2 million from 549 theaters.
