Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" made a strong impression in its opening weekend, particularly for a non-franchise World War II movie, and the R-rated comedy "Girls Trip" proved a worthy adversary. Luc Besson's sci-fi epic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", however, proved to be a huge disappointment.

"Dunkirk" topped the charts with an impressive $50.5 million in its opening weekend, which may not seem like huge numbers compared to the usual summer franchise blockbusters, but for a movie that doesn't belong to any franchise, and also happens to be a war movie, which aren't usually very popular at the box-office, it's actually a great performance. Internationally, it picked up another $55.4 million. Nolan's films usually end up with some big numbers at the box-office, and if word of mouth helps the film moving forward, it may hold steady in the following weeks. The film received an "A-" from opening night audiences, according to CinemaScore, and the critics fell in love with it (92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 94 on Metacritic).
The R-rated comedy "Girls Trip" opened in second place with $30.3 million, a solid result versus its $19 million budget. The film scored a perfect "A+" from CinemaScore, and critics had nothing but good things to say about it (89% on Rotten Tomatoes and on Metacritic).
While "Spider-Man: Homecoming" only dropped one spot to #4, grossing $22 million, last week's #1 movie, "War for the Planet of the Apes" took a steep 63% dive and fell to #4, grossing $20.4 million in its second weekend. Sony's Spider-Man movie has reached a domestic gross of $251.7 million, while the Apes sequel has now grossed $97.7 million domestically.
The Top 5 is rounded up by the last of the new wide releases, the ultra-expensive sci-fi blockbuster "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets". The film ended up being a disappointment with only $17 million in its opening weekend. It should, however, perform better overseas, and it really needs to, in order to earn back its budget, which reportedly hovers somewhere between $150 and $209 million, making it the most expensive French film ever made. "Valerian..." scored a modest "B-" on CinemaScore and critics offered mixed reviews (54% on Rotten Tomatoes and 51 on Metacritic).
New Wide Releases: "Dunkirk", "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", "Girls Trip".
Biggest Drop : "War for the Planet of the Apes" (-63%)
Smallest Drop : "Baby Driver" (-31%)
