Box-Office: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 Dominated Thanksgiving Week

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" remained undisputed this weekend with a 3-day gross of $56 million, making it the third highest-grossing Thanksgiving release. However, the previous installment in the franchise, "Catching Fire" performed much better with $110 million grossed in the 5 days of Thanksgiving week last year. 

Mockingjay's strong performance meant that this week's new releases had to contend with the leftover scraps. "Penguins of Madagascar" opened in second place with $25 million over the weekend and $36 million in the 5 days since Thanksgiving, a weak performance for the DreamWorks' spinoff which cost $132 million to make.

Another victim was "Horrible Bosses 2", which ranked fifth with $23M million over the same 5-day timeframe. The comedy sequel wasn't so expensive with a budget estimated at $42 million, so they shouldn't have a problem turning a profit. The result isn't all that shocking since the original "Horrible Bosses" grossed $28 million in its opening weekend, and this wouldn't be the first comedy sequel to gross less than the original. For a case in point, "The Hangover" sequels each earned less than the previous installment.

Meanwhile, "Big Hero 6" and "Interstellar" are still performing incredibly well, with the latter actually showing an increase from last weekend, possibly due to the fact that the trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was shown in 20 IMAX theaters before Nolan's film over the 5-day holiday.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Teaser Trailer and Images

This is the moment fans around the world have been waiting for. The first trailer for J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has been released along with five new images. Although the title doesn't mention what episode it is, it's Episode VII in the series, a sequel to the original trilogy and it will take place 22 years after the events from "Return of the Jedi". The plot is a mystery so far and the teaser only features an ominous narration by Andy Serkis which is wonderfully cryptic. I suppose we'll witness yet another return of the Sith. The trailer also gives us a first look at the Millennium Falcon evading some TIE Fighters, a somewhat new X-Wing charging into battle and a rather impractical Sith lightsaber design. The sequel stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters on December 18th, 2015.

Penelope Cruz to Star in ZOOLANDER 2

Comedy sequels are notoriously difficult to pull off. Not only do they turn out to be worse than the original in most cases, but one of the biggest problems is that studios are very cautious about greenlighting these kind of sequels. One such sequel that never seemed to build much momentum was "Zoolander 2", the follow-up to the 2001 Ben Stiller comedy about a goofy male model. However, the project picked up some steam recently and has now landed its first new cast member to join Stiller. According to Deadline, Penelope Cruz has signed on to star in "Zoolander 2".

The screenplay is penned by Justin Theroux and will be directed by Stiller. Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson will also reprise the roles of Mugatu and Zoolander's rival Hansel, respectively.

Cruz can also be seen next year in the Spanish drama "Ma ma" written and directed by Julio Medem, and the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy "Grimsby".

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS Thanksgiving Trailer and 8 Featurettes

A new trailer for Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings" was released on Thanksgiving, and just to make sure that everyone knows this movie is EPIC, 20th Century Fox released a total of 8 behind-the-scenes featurettes that pretty much highlight every aspect of the massive production. I guess they just revealed all the Blu-Ray extras. The film stars Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. They are joined in supporting roles by Aaron Paul, Ben Kingsley, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Mendelsohn and John Turturro.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" opens in theaters on December 12th.

New KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Trailer and 5 Character Posters

A new trailer has been released for Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman: The Secret Service" along with five character posters. The film is based on the comic book by Mark Millar ("Kick-Ass") and it stars Colin Firth as a veteran secret agent who recruits a promising young street kid (Taron Egerton) and helps him join the ranks of the British spy organization known as Kingsman. Personally, I loved the bit about the dog named JB. So far the film looks hilarious, poking fun at the spy action hero genre and featuring great comedic performances from everyone involved. The cast also features Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Mark Hamill, Jack Davenport, Sofia Boutella and Michael Caine.

"Kingsman: The Secret Service" opens in theaters on February 13, 2015.

Natalie Portman in Talks to Join Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs Biopic

Aaron Sorkin's ambitious Steve Jobs biopic turned out to be a rather difficult endeavour. Initially developed for Sony Pictures, the film was offered to David Fincher ("Gone Girl") to direct, but he dropped out and was replaced by Danny Boyle ("127 Hours"), and had huge stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale circling the lead role before eventually leaving. Then Sony surprisingly gave up on the whole project which was subsequently picked up by Universal.

With a new studio in charge, the film still doesn't officially have a lead actor (although Michael Fassbender is courted for the role), but it seems to have found its leading lady. Natalie Portman is in negotiations to join Boyle's film as Jobs' daughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs, who has been described as the "the heroine of the movie".

The film is adapted from Walter Isaacson's best-selling biography "Steve Jobs" and it is produced by Scott Rudin, Christian Colson, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady.

THE INTERVIEW Final Trailer: James Franco and Kim Jong-Un Love Katy Perry

The final trailer for the comedy "The Interview" has been released. As you may already know the film is about two tabloid journalists played by James Franco and Seth Rogen who land an interview with Kim Jong-Un. Their dream interview turns into a nightmare when the CIA recruits them to assassinate the North Korean dictator. The trailer provides new footage which now includes Kim Jong-Un who is played by Randall Park ("Veep"). The film also stars Lizzy Caplan, Diana Bang and Charles Rahi Chun.

"The Interview" opens in theaters on December 25th.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS Trailers and Posters Featuring Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco and Tom Wilkinson

Two trailers (Green and Red Band) and three character posters (of sorts) have been released for the comedy "Unfinished Business". The film stars Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco and Tom Wilkinson as business partners who try to successfuly start their own company and travel to Europe to close the most important deal of their lives. The film is directed by Ken Scott ("Starbuck") and also stars Sienna Miller, Nick Frost and James Marsden.

"Unfinished Business" opens in theaters on March 6, 2015.

Oscar Isaac to Play Villain in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" was a huge success for 20th Century Fox and franchise director Bryan Singer. Now expectations are high for the follow-up "X-Men: Apocalypse", so everyone is hard at work to deliver on their promise. Today we have the first official casting news for the sequel.

Oscar Isaac ("Inside Llewyn Davis") has signed on to play Apocalypse, the villain of the story which takes place in the 1980s and pits the younger X-Men against the terrible opponent. So terrible in fact, that the filmmakers have described the film as a "disaster movie" and the director himself has declared that "'Apocalypse' will have more of the mass destruction that 'X-Men' films, to date, have not relied upon".

The script has been written by Simon Kinberg and the cast includes Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Hugh Jackman.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will be released in theaters on May 27, 2016.

CAKE Trailer and Poster: Jennifer Aniston Delivers Riveting Dramatic Performance

The trailer and poster for the drama "Cake" have been released. The film stars Jennifer Aniston as a woman who becomes fascinated by the suicide of a woman (Anna Kendrick) in her chronic pain support group and develops a relationship with her husband (Sam Worthington). It looks like a solid dramatic effort from Aniston and the supporting cast looks equally amazing. Chris Messina, Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Britt Robertson, Lucy Walters, Lucy Punch, Mamie Gummer, Camille Mana, Manuel Garcia Rulfo and Marianne Jean-Baptiste also star.

"Cake" opens in limited release in December followed by a wider release in January. Obviously, they're expecting Aniston to pick up some nominations in the upcoming awards season.

JUPITER ASCENDING - New International Trailer and Images

A new international trailer and a batch of images have been released for "Jupiter Ascending". Written and directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski, the creators of "The Matrix Trilogy" and "Cloud Atlas", the film tells the story of a Russian immigrant (Mila Kunis) who discovers she is destined to become the Queen of the Universe and a genetically engineered ex-military hunter (Channing Tatum) who must protect her. The trailer still manages to find new footage to show without being too spoilery, although it does hint at Sean Bean having a hidden agenda, possibly a villainous one. The film also stars Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, James D’Arcy, Tim Pigott-Smith and Doona Bae.

"Jupiter Ascending" opens in theaters on February 6, 2015.

PAN Trailer, Images and Posters: Joe Wright’s PETER PAN Prequel Chews All Kinds of Scenery

The first trailer, posters and images for "Pan" have been released. A prequel to the story of Peter Pan, the film is director Joe Wright's foray into the fantasy genre. While the visuals are certainly impressive, the film looks like it's way over-the-top, with everyone hamming it up, especially Hugh Jackman who plays Blackbeard. I'm just surprised nobody asked Johnny Depp to come on board. This new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie follows the story of an orphan (Levi Miller) who is spirited away to the magical Neverland, where he ultimately discovers his destiny of becoming the hero forever known as Peter Pan. The cast also includes Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, Adeel Akhtar, Amanda Seyfried, Jack Charles, Taejoo Na, Nonso Anozie, Kathy Burke, Kurt Egyiawan, Lewis MacDougall and Leni Zieglmeier.

"Pan" opens in theaters on July 17, 2015

JURASSIC WORLD Trailer and Images: Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard Chased by Dinosaurs

We finally have the first official trailer for "Jurassic World", as well as a new batch of images from the film. The highly anticipated sequel directed by Colin Trevvorow ("Safety Not Guaranteed") will take place 22 years after the original "Jurassic Park" and it will feature a fully-functional dinosaur theme park. What it also features is a new genetically engineered dino that will apparently be the cause of the ensuing chaos and mayhem. The film stars Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy and Judy Greer.

"Jurassic World" opens in theaters on June 12, 2015.

Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly Confirmed for TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2

HBO has officially confirmed that the cast of "True Detective" Season 2 will also include Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly. They will join Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn in this new season. The first two episodes will be directed by Justin Lin ("Fast & Furious 6") and the new eight-episode season will focus on three police officers and a criminal who will navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder. The cast will also feature Lolita Davidovich, Aidan Gillen, Michael Irby, Adria Arjona and Abigail Spencer. Production has begun in California on Monday. New Trailer and Poster for DreamWorks Animation's HOME

Today we have a new trailer and poster for Dreamworks Animation's upcoming feature "Home". As the alien race called Boov is taking over the planet Earth, one resourceful girl (Rihanna) manages to avoid capture and finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The film is directed by Tim Johnson ("Antz", "Over the Hedge") and it also features the voices of Steve Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Matt Jones.

"Home" opens in theaters on March 27, 2015.

INTO THE WOODS Featurette: Meryl Streep Sings "Stay With Me"

A new featurette has been released for Rob Marshall's "Into the Woods", the adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical of the same name. This new featurette focuses almost entirely on Meryl Streep and her performance. It also features a lengthy clip in which Streep performs part of the song "Stay With Me". One thing's certain. We're probably looking at another Oscar nomination for Streep. The film also stars James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, Tracey Ullman, Billy Magnussen, Lucy Punch, Mackenzie Mauzy and Christine Baranski.

"Into the Woods" opens in theaters on December 25th.

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD Trailer and Poster

The first trailer and poster for the period drama "Far From the Madding Crowd" have been released. Based on the book by Thomas Hardy, the film stars Carey Mulligan as a young woman who maintains relationships with three very different men, played by Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts and Tom Sturridge. Thomas Vinterberg ("The Hunt") directs from a script by David Nicholls ("One Day").

"Far From the Madding Crowd" opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.

STRANGE MAGIC Trailer and Images: George Lucas' New Animated Feature

The first trailer and images for Lucasfilm's animated feature "Strange Magic" have been released. The film is based on a story by George Lucas who drew inspiration from "A Midsummer Night’s Dream", and it focuses on goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. The film is a musical and it uses popular songs from the past six decades to help tell the tale. The voice cast features Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Meredeth Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare.

"Strange Magic" opens in theaters on January 23rd.

PITCH PERFECT 2 Trailer, Images and Posters: The Barden Bellas are Back

The first trailer for "Pitch Perfect 2" has been released along with a batch of new images, both from the studio and Entertainment Weekly, and two teaser posters. The sequel finds the The Barden Bellas joining an a cappella World Championship, so the stakes are much higher this time. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, the film stars Anna Kendrick, Hailee Steinfeld, Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, Skylar Astin, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Alexis Knapp, Ester Dean, Hana Mae Lee, John Michael Higgins, Joe Lo Truglio and Katey Segal.

"Pitch Perfect 2" opens in theaters on May 15, 2015.

New Games: LITTLE BIG PLANET 3 (Sony) - PS4 and PS3

Video Game Description: Sackboy is back, this time with playable new friends in an all new handcrafted adventure. In LittleBigPlanet 3, Sackboy is transported to a new planet called Bunkum, a creative paradise where abundant ideas drift through the sky. Unwittingly, Sackboy helps release three mythical creatures called the Titans who aim to ruin Bunkum and transform the world’s most unskilled Creator, Newton, into a terrible monster. To restore balance to the land, Sackboy is going to need help in the form of Bunkum's ancient heroes: Toggle, OddSock and Swoop.

In a franchise first, LittleBigPlanet 3 introduces three brand new playable characters -- Toggle, OddSock and Swoop -- each with their own unique abilities and personalities. Sackboy must learn to work with his new friends throughout his new adventure. LBP3 also introduces even more layers of z-axis depth.
