Harley Quinn first appeared in "Batman: The Animated Series", but has never been used in any of the big-screen adaptations. The character's origin story was further developed in the 1994 graphic novel "Mad Love" in which she is described as Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzell, an Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who volunteers to analyze the Joker, but she's manipulated by him, ultimately falling for him and becoming his accomplice.
The Wrap also reports that Academy-Award winner Jared Leto ("Dallas Buyers Club") has been eyed to play The Joker, but it's very much a rumor at this point. Initially the screenplay for "Suicide Squad" did not feature the Joker but an upcoming revision by director David Ayer is rumored to include the Clown Prince of Crime.
Margot Robbie is currently on a hot streak after her breakthrough role in "The Wolf of Wall Street". She can also be seen in the Will Smith crime comedy "Focus", David Yates' "Tarzan", the sci-fi "Z for Zachariah" and the comedy "The Taliban Shuffle".
"Suicide Squad" opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.
