Labyrinth 1986 Jennifer Connelly David Bowie

"Nosferatu" and "The Witch" filmmaker Robert Eggers has signed on to write and direct a sequel to the classic 1986 musical fantasy film "Labyrinth". Eggers will write the script alongside Sjón, his collaborator on the 2022 Viking epic "The Northman". Eggers and Sjón will also work together on the filmmaker's upcoming werewolf horror film "Werwulf", which hits theaters on Christmas Day 2026.

Plot details are under wraps. The project has been in the works since 2017 with Scott Derrickson ("Sinister", "The Black Phone") previously attached to direct. Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson executive producing.

The original film was directed by Jim Henson and executive produced by George Lucas. The story followed a teenager (Jennifer Connelly, who journeys through an otherworldly maze to rescue her baby brother, whom she inadvertently wished away to the realm of Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie).

Upon its release in 1986, "Labyrinth" only grossed $34 million against a budget of $25 million, but fared better overseas. Its visual effects were nominated at the 1987 BAFTA awards. Throughout the years the film's popularity has grown, leading to tie-in novels and comic books, video games, special screenings and even an annual fan masquerade ball, which is considered one of the largest in the world.
