Weekend Box Office Den Of Thieves 2 Pantera

The heist action thriller sequel "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" has overtaken both "Mufasa: The Lion King" and "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" to become Lionsgate's first #1 movie in over a year, thus breaking the studio's cold streak.

"Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" opened in first place with $15 million from 3,008 theaters. That's about the same as the first film's 15.2 million debut in 2018, except that one was released in only 2,432 theaters. The sequel was also slightly more expensive, costing $40 million to produce, comapred to the original's $30 million budget. Both the critical and audience reception was generally mixed (59% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" CinemaScore).

In its fourth weekend, the Disney prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" has stepped back to second place with $14.2 million, a 39.4% decline. The film has now grossed $189.7 million in North America and $352.4 million from foreign markets. That's a global total of $542.2 million.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" also dropped one position, finishing in third place with $11.3 million, down 46.8%. Its domestic total has now reached $204.8 million, while overseas it raked in $180.3 million for a worldwide total of $385.1 million after four weeks in theaters.

In fourth place we find the horror remake "Nosferatu" with $6.8 million and a 47.3% decline. The sleeper hit has now grossed $81.9 million domestically and $53.5 million internationally. That's a total of $135.4 million worldwide.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney's animated sequel "Moana 2" with $6.5 million, down 47.5%. The film's domestic tally is now at $434.8 million, and with another $555.3 million internationally, its global cume has reached $990.2 million.

In other news, the Telugu action film "Game Changer" opened in ninth place with $2.1 million from 800 theaters, and the Pamela Anderson starrer "The Last Showgirl" received a semi-wide release, opening in tenth place with $1.5 million from 870 locations.

The Robbie Williams biopic "Better Man" also expanded nationwide over the weekend, but failed to attract moviegoers, grossing just $1 million from 1,291 locations. The film cost around $110 million to produce, and Paramount acquired it for $25 million. Even its overseas performance is lacklustre, raking in only $8.8 million, so far.
