"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King" dominated the Christmas box office and went toe to toe, but the Disney prequel ended up coming out on top over the 5-day weekend, while the video game movie topped the 3-day frame. Robert Eggers' horror remake "Nosferatu" pulled off a pleasant surprise. Meanwhile the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" scored a solid debut, while the sports drama "The Fire Inside" failed to attract moviegoers.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is still the #1 movie over the holidays with $37 million over the 3-day weekend and $59 million over the 5-day holiday frame. The film has now grossed a total of $136.5 million domestically and $74 million internationally for a worldwide total of $210.5 million.
"Mufasa: The Lion King" finished its sophomore weekend in second place with $36.8 million, while the 5-day extended weekend was $63.8 million, slightly higher than Sonic's. The prequel's domestic total has reached $113.1 million, while overseas it raked in $214.3 milion for a global total of $327.5 million.
The horror film "Nosferatu" was a big holiday surprise, grossing $21.6 million for the 3-day and $40.8 million for the 5-day holiday weekend, from 2,992 theaters. It ranks as one of the best openings for Focus Features, the biggest ever debut for a horror movie over Christmas, overtaking Robert Rodriguez's "The Faculty" ($11.6 million in 1998), and it's also Eggers' biggest movie ever at the domestic box office. The film has received a positve reception from critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes) but only a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B-" CinemaScore).
In fourth place we find "Wicked", which grossed $19.7 million in its sixth weekend, up 39.6% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $424.5 million in North America and $210.8 million overseas, which adds up to $635.4 million worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney's animated sequel "Moana 2" with $18.9 million, up 43.1% from the previous frame. The film's domestic tally is now at $395.3 million, while overseas its total stands at $488.4 million. That's $883.7 million worldwide after only five weeks in theaters.
The biographical drama "A Complete Unknown" starring Timothee Chalamet opened in sixth place with $11.6 million over the 3-day weekend, and $23.2 million over the extended holiday frame from 2,835 theaters. This is Chalamet's biggest non-franchise opening following two "Dune" movies and "Wonka". The film received a positive reception from both critics (78% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).
Amazon/MGM Studios' "The Fire Inside" opened in tenth place with $1.9 million from 2,006 theaters over the 3-day frame, and $4.2 million over the 5-day weekend. The film received rave reviews from critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences also enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).
