The weekend's only new wide releases, the comic book movie "Kraven the Hunter" and the anime "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" both tanked in spectacular fashion. Meanwhile, "Moana 2" and "Wicked" are still going strong, while "Gladiator II" is slowing down, but still around for the Top 5.

"Moana 2" is still at the top of the charts, grossing $26.4 million in its third weekend, which is a 48.3% decline from the previous frame. The film's domestic total has reached $337.3 million after only 19 days. With another $380.4 million from foreign markets, the film's global total is now at $717.8 million, already the fourth highest grossing film worldwide of 2024 after surpassing "Dune: Part Two".
"Wicked" is also holding in second place with $22.6 million, down only 37.9%. With $359.1 million domestically and $166.1 million internationally, the worldwide total now sits at $525.3 million.
In third place we find the first new release, Sony's R-rated "Kraven the Hunter", which opened with a catastrophic $11 million from 3,211 theaters against a $130 million budget. That's even worse than "Madame Web" which scored $15.3 million when it was released in theaters. Overseas it isn't doing very well either, raking in $15 million for a worldwide debut of $26 million. Ouch ! The film was poorly received both by critics (15% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("C" CinemaScore).
"Gladiator II" landed in fourth place over the weekend with $7.6 million, a soft 39.1% drop. The epic blockbuster has now grossed $145.7 million in North America and $252.6 million overseas for a global total of $398.3 million after 25 days in theaters. The film's huge $310 million budget, however, means that the movie is still in the red.
Warner Bros' anime film "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" failed to find an audience, opening at #5 with a meager $4.5 million from 2,602 theaters. Overseas it only raked in $5.7 million. The movie's budget was a low $30 million, but even so, it doesn't look like the it will be able to turn a profit. Both the critical and audience reception has been mixed (50% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" CinemaScore).
In other news, the 2003 animated Daft Punk film "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem" opened in ninth place with $2.3 million from 641 theaters.
"Wicked" is also holding in second place with $22.6 million, down only 37.9%. With $359.1 million domestically and $166.1 million internationally, the worldwide total now sits at $525.3 million.
