Sophie Turner To Play Lara Croft In Tomb Raider Amazon Series

"Game of Thrones" alum Sophie Turner is in final negotiations to star as iconic dual-pistol wielding adventurer Lara Croft in Amazon's upcoming "Tomb Raider" series which was greenlit earlier this year with Phoebe Waller-Bridge set to write and executive produce. The show was first reported as being in development at the streamer in January 2023, and it hails from Crystal Dynamics, Amazon MGM Studios and Legendary Television. The character was previously portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two films (2001 and 2003) and by Alicia Vikander in 2018.

Amazon MGM head Jennifer Salke called the project "epic" and "globe-trotting" while announcing the series order in May. The show has been a passion project for writer/executive producer Waller-Bridge, who spoke fondly of the title character: "Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats 'n all."

The "Tomb Raider" series is being developed under a pact between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios which comes via dj2's first-look deal with the studio to develop additional "Tomb Raider" stories into series and films. Executive producers include Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment and Michael Scheel. Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The series is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studio

Turner is best known for playing Sansa Stark in all eight seasons of the HBO series "Game of Thrones" and received an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama in 2019. She is also known for her role as Jean Grey in Fox's "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "X-Men: Dark Phoenix". She recently starred in the ITV/CW miniseries "Joan" and the Max limited series "The Staircase".
