The comic book origin story "Joker" made a comeback this week, claiming the top spot while Disney's "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" finished in second place. However, the distance between the two is extremely small, and could end up being switched when the finals come in. Meanwhile, newcomers "Black and Blue" and "Countdown" performed as expected, which isn't particularly impressive.

Warner Bros' "Joker" once again topped the charts with $18.9 million, dipping just 35% in its fourth week. The film's domestic total has reached $227.5 million after 21 days. Overseas it added another $47.8 million, bringing its overseas tally to $571.5 million. With a worldwide total of $849 million, the film has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing "Deadpool 2" ($785 million). It's also the fifth largest DC Comics adaptation of all-time, ahead of "Wonder Woman" ($821.8 million) and behind "Batman v Superman" (873.6 million).
Disney's sequel "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" dropped to #2 in its second weekend with $18.5 million, which is a 50% drop. The film's $65.4 million domestic tally is problematic, but thanks to its performance overseas, the studio is safe from ending up with a flop. Its international cume has reached $228 million after bringing in $64.3 million this weekend.
The animated film "The Addams Family" dropped just 28% as Halloween approaches and brought in $11.7 million over the weekend for a domestic total of $72.8 million. Internationally it raked in $10.5 million from 19 markets, and its overseas tally now stands at $11.2 million.
Sony's "Zombieland: Double Tap" landed in fourth place with $11.5 million. The film dropped 57% in its second weekend, and its domestic total is currently at $47 million. The zombie comedy scored $9 million from overseas markets this weekend, which brings its inernational cume to $16.6 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the first of the new releases, the horror film "Countdown", which opened with $9 million from 2,675 theaters against a $6.5 million budget. It also opened in 16 markets overseas, bringing in $1.7 million. The film received a harsh reception from both critics (26% on Rotten Tomatoes and 30 on Metacritic) and moviegoers (70% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in a heavy contrast to a terrible "C+" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
The other new wide release, the cop thriller "Black and Blue" opened in sixth place with $8.3 million from 2,062 theaters. With a budget of $12 million, it's not exactly a disaster, but it's definitely unimpressive. The film's critical reception was mixed-to-negative (47% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic), while moviegoers mostly enjoyed it (93% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare "A+" from CinemaScore).

Liberated from Harvey Weinstein's bankrupt company and reworked by director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the film's new version has been hailed as an improvement over its original form, but critics were still underwhelmed (57% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic). Audiences, however, generally liked what they saw (82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B" from CinemaScore's polls).
