Idris Elba in Talks to Replace Will Smith in SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel

Idris Elba to replace Will Smith in Suicide Squad 2
Idris Elba is very close to joining the DC Comics cinematic universe as sources report that the actor is in talks with Warner Bros to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" sequel. Smith had to drop out last week due to scheduling conflicts.

The sequel, simply titled "The Suicide Squad" will be directed by "Guardians of the Galaxy" filmmaker James Gunn, after the first film's helmer David Ayer declined to return. Gunn also penned the script, which Warner seems to like a whole lot. Sources say that Gunn met with Elba on Friday and things went really well. Apparently, the actor was the "first and only choice" for both the studio and Gunn.

The follow-up will feature mostly DC characters that did not appear in the 2016 film, but also returning characters like Deadshot, Harley Quinn and, maybe, Rick Flagg. In a way the film will be a soft reboot, since its predecessor has received a largely negative reception. Although Margot Robbie is starring in her own Harley Quinn spinoff titled "Birds of Prey", she has not been confirmed for the "Suicide Squad" sequel.

Elba can be seen this year as the villain in the upcoming "Fast & Furious" spin-off "Hobbs & Shaw", and has finished work on the adaptation of the Broadway musical "Cats".

"The Suicide Squad" will be released on August 6, 2021.
