This week's two new wide releases, the Spider-Man spinoff "Venom" and the remake "A Star is Born" delivered strong debuts, and the former even managed to break some records. It was a great weekend at the box-office, with these two films contributing to what is now the largest October weekend of all-time.

"Venom" opened in first place with a massive $80 million from 4,250 theaters, breaking the October opening weekend record previously set by "Gravity" in 2013 with $55.7 million. Sony's film brought in another $125.2 million from 58 international markets, and also conquered the October global opening record with a total of over $205 million. The only question that remains now is whether "Venom" can maintain a decent pace in the next weeks. The film has been somewhat divisive, with critics showing negative feelings towards it (32% on Rotten Tomatoes and 32 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a decent "B+" from its opening night audience polls. If moviegoers actually enjoyed it, there's a chance that next week's drop won't be very steep.
In second place, the musical drama remake "A Star is Born" starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper opened with a strong $41.2 million from 3,686 theaters. The film has grossed a total of $42.7 million after adding the $1.35 million from Tuesday and Wednesday sneak peek previews. Overseas, the film added another $14 million from 31 countries. "A Star is Born" received almost universal praise from both critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 88 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("A" from CinemaScore), which should help the film's evolution in the coming weeks.
The animated feature "Smallfoot" finished in third place with $14.9 million over the weekend, which brings its domestic tally to $42.7 million after a soft 35% drop. Overseas, the film has raked in a total of $35.2 million.
Last week's #1 film, the comedy "Night School" starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish, landed in fourth place with $12.2 million after a 55% drop in its second weekend. The film is still a hit with $46.7 million against a $29 million budget. Internationally it has grossed $12 million from 21 markets.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the fantasy film "The House With a Clock in Its Walls" with $7.2 million, which brings its domestic tally to $55 million after three weeks in release.
